After replacing the glow plugs on my e320 the engine has developed a “chuffing sound” the only thing I can think of is that the plugs havnt seated correctly but they seemed to go in and tighten up fine,I can’t seem to think of anything else I could have done??

Sounds like there is some blow by around the glow plug.

Get yourself some washing up liquid in a spray bottle and spray the liquid it around the plugs / injectors when the engine is running , this will soon show up any escaping gasses.

Once located and repaired you will go from chuff , chuff , chuff to chuffed with yourself.

I think on closer inspection there is black gunge all around several of the injectors,I’m guessing it wasn’t just coincidence and it was doing it prior to replacing the glow plugs but I just didn’t hear it with the beige cover on and bonnet shut!

Leaking from an injector seat , maybe you have just become more attentive because you have done some work ?
Definitely being more attentive once the glow plugs were successfully replaced, I do that, attend to one issue and notice three more whilst there because all the sound proofing is removed around the injectors and engine cover :(

Look on the brightside, no glowplugs snapped whilst replacing, common problem.:)

I was very careful taking the glow plugs out,I worked them back and forth the tiniest amount until I got them loose! The glow plugs light doesn’t stay on anymore after starting but it still doesn’t start any better! Will the poor cold starting be down to the leaking injector seals?

I seem to remember someone recommending Honda seals as being better ones?

A guy on you tube does a video on how to do it and recommends Nissan seals because they are thicker.

I wonder if it’s worth changing the relay? As I said the gp light no longer stays on after starting but still churns over for ages before it starts and even takes several turns of the key!

From what you have said there was a fault was with the old glow plugs which you have changed. A much shorter light on time indicates they are working correctly. You now need to clear the leak on the injectors.

Different from car to car but no more than 2-3 seconds. A bit longer if the car is left outside overnight.

Ah right thanks,I was hoping that might help diagnose the relay but sounds like it’s ok
