W211 2.7 Cdi 140,000 miles.
I plan to replace my current SBC complete unit with a used but reconditioned unit from a slightly later car (has the larger brushes ... which will be renewed before fitting).
I had the 'Service Brake Visit Workshop' warning message many months ago ... the counter was re-set but now time to replace the unit.
I am hoping its just a 'remove and replace' job but was wondering if the new component will work without needing to be coded to the car.
I assume it communicates with the ECU, so that gave me the idea it may need coding.
Any advice welcomed.

Do you know how many miles between the reset of counter in pump to where you are now?

My SBC unit went recently at 86k and I had it refurbished. The local specialist took care of all of it for me so I did pay a premium as I was not able to do the work myself.

Re-set done without overhaul so not best practice hence reason for fitting refurbished pump.
Mileage since reset is only 3,000 miles but I am aware that Mercedes increased the count limit on later SBC pumps (mine is earlier December 2003 model),
so a reset would be ok (for a limited period) as this was obviously ok for Mercedes too when it increased the limit.
The SBC system be a decent way to efficiently brake a vehicle but I consider a manufacturer building in a part that renders the car useless after a set period of time .... that can only be rectified by the manufacturer ... as very dodgy practice in terms of consumer rights.
The fact Mercedes discontinued the SBC system after only a few years, says it all!!

No it's not coded. I changed mine on 2002 R230 with no problems at all.
