Hi. Looking for recommendations for tyres for an 2006 E280. Just bought the car last week and drove it in the rain for the first time today, it was scary on roundabouts even at very low speeds (unless you really enjoy losing grip obviously, my wife didn't appreciate it much!) the tyres fitted are Rovelo RPX988 and although they seem to get good reviews they are not MO tyres and the rears are getting near the legal limit. I've also just measured and found they they are about 5 psi over the correct pressure so that may have a bearing on it too. They do need replaced though, at least the rears do, so what do you recommend for the car? Continentals or Michelin a good shout?

Anything else that can cause the terrible lack of grip on these?

Thanks

Many on here rate Uniroyal Rainsport 3s very highly (including myself). Go to Camskill for really good prices but remember you'll need to a range your own fitting.

I have RS3s on my 211 estate. Totally epic, superb and £80 a corner on Camskills for staggered 18" setup.

Picking a tyre people have heard of would be an improvement :) .
I have Uniroyal Rainsport on the Clk fitted recently at £50 a corner , budget was important for me and at that price you get a good tyre ( I think Uniroyal are the budget arm of continental ?)
My E320cdi has some 5 year old Goodyears on which have been very good , only a couple of roundabout bottom clenching incidents , one in the wet and one where there was a diesel spillage .

Having to watch the budget here too, especially after just buying the car. I'd never heard of these either, just googled them after restarting my heart after yesterday's rainy journey! Thanks for the recommendations, I'll have a look tonight. Need to get this sorted quickly, it's never dry for long in Scotland :)

If you have just bourght the car , and you haven't had a rear wheel drive car before ? You are suffering the normal learning curve to never boot it on a bend/roundabout in the wet . But changing to decent tyres will improve it 100% .

Try running 33psi all round when you get the new tyres fitted

The United States Rubber Company, bought by Michelin in 1990... it's an arm of Michelin and is interestingly set up to field products for the muscle car scene.

I change to winter tyres towards the end of every year, like many on here, and even then my Mercs always slide around a bit. It seems to be a Merc characteristic as much as a rear wheel drive trait.
Hamilton seems to have got the hang of it though!

Used to only drive rear wheel drives but it's been all fwd and 4x4 for the last ten years anyway. Wasn't booting it round the roundabouts, taking them pretty slow in fact especially after the first wee drama. Pretty certain it will be a new car with decent tyres though! Good to know about the need for winter tyres, I'll start to look out for some, good time of year to buy them

That's the same as my E320cdi . I bourght a set of Merc alloys from eBay for under £300 a few years ago , I got them in 16" because there are a lot more winter tyres in that size , and I just swap them over myself .

You'll have a good choice of winters in that size- personally though I'd be tempted to the Michelin Cross Climates- superb tyres and no need to change them over at all. It's not like we get Arctic conditions in the UK and those are a good compromise

^ Good advice , I must admit if I didn't have a lot of good tread on both sets I would go with cross climate .
