Would really appreciate some advice on how to resolve this please.

Would could be causing dampness / wetness on the front carpets of a W211?

The actual mat is not wet (meaning nothing dripping from above). When I lift the mat, it’s on the actual carpet itself.

Had a good poke around the footwell area and it’s all dry. Then thought maybe it’s coming from underneath so tried to lift the carpet to expose the foam and plastic bottom area and as far as my hand could reach (didn’t remove the whole carpet) it’s seemed ok.

Just totally confused as to where this dampness could be coming from.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Blocked scuttle drains in front of the windscreen - leaves and other detritus block the drains, rainwater then runs through the heater and into the footwell

Thankyou. But in this case would I expect to see the actual mat wet itself. The thing I can’t get my head around is that the top of the mat is actually dry.

it’s when you lift it, the carpet underneath is wet.

Can the water come up defying gravity in a way?

The water has travelled down through the mat maybe and the mat has dried on top ? Rust holes in the floor ?
Either way get a hosepipe into the scuttle drains as BC says

It can run out of the heater vents into the carpet on the side of the transmission tunnel then down into the footwell - so you'll find it under the floor mats. I had a car that the car mat was frozen to the carpet - that was the first indication I had a water problem...
Scuttle drains were blocked, I remove all leaves and check the drains regularly as there can be quite a lot of electrics under the carpet on Mercedes and then you're into a world of pain.

just a thought.
Mats are lined underneath with rubber, sitting on top of carpet.
hot air from heater blows on to mat, cold air trapped underneath, hence condensation perhaps ?

+1

As others, it runs down the inside of the bulkhead, underneath the foam and soaks in from underneath.
