Hi all,
I'm new to the forum and am after some guidance if possible. I am loosing oil from my car which is leaving a lovely stain on my driveway and have been told that it is common for a seal to go around the turbo. I am getting quite strong fumes in the cabin through the blowers when standing still and was wondering if anybody has experienced the same symptoms? I am planning to change the glow plugs this weekend and if this is a simple enough fix will carry both out at the same time.

Thanks in advance,

Tom

Welcome,

The oil cooler for the OM642 sits at the bottom of the engine V and is the most likely cause, if you are loosing as much oil as you say it needs sorting ASAP, likely cost 10hrs labour and a pittance for the seals. This is a known problem with these engines MB issued upgraded Viton seals (purple) to deal with it

The orange seal on the front of the turbo where the black batwing connects is a common leak point , but I don’t believe this would leak so badly that oil drips onto the drive .
If the oil has a red tinge it could be ATF

Oil doesn't have a red tinge, but is leaking quite a bit. I was told it could be the orange seal but as you mention, it is unusual to leak on to the ground from this point. I didn't know if the fumes were maybe a tell tale sign of something?

i wouldn’t recommend it the turbo and all the inlet and outlet plumbing plus fuel rails have to be removed. There are some good videos on YouTube showing what’s involved I would find a recommended Independent to do the job which should come in circa £700 plus the cost of a new oil cooler which most recommend

Hi, I live near Kings Lynn but Cambridgeshire side.
Bit out on a limb there , Alex Crow , Stowmarket would be my recommendation , maybe another member can recommend someone closer ?
Maybe get a local general garage to get the lower panels off and diagnose the likely fault first ? (£50?)

Will probably go with a local garage to get a diagnosis but thanks for the recommendation and your time.

If it does need doing (oil cooler) , an MB Indy like Alex , will save you money overall by knowing the job and exactly what needs doing without guessing . Just my pennysworth .

^+1 I wouldn’t use a local garage there is a lot to break and some specialised knowledge helps a lot
