Your advice please. The two parts have separated. There are two tiny spring-loaded tee-shaped locators on the front cover which with some fiddling I can seemingly re-engage with the rear part but as soon as the assembly is slid back beyond the cup holder/storage pocket (to reveal the 12v socket) the rear part of the cover on return is left behind deep within the console.
Is there a trick to connecting the two parts correctly?
Kind regards,
Tonew

All is well - a close run thing

I can draw a line under this issue. Mercedes estimated a repair cost of £250-£300 which inspired me to have one more go at the mechanism. There was not the slightest chance of my understanding the reason for the complicated array of protrusions and channels underneath seen by torchlight but I must have displaced the obstruction by deep pinky intrusion and managed to clear the problem - well, almost. The cover still has a propensity to separate if closed quickly so there is still a resistance somewhere underneath knocking-off the rear part but I can live with this.

That's a good thought sir. A car park ticket perhaps? I'll have another look. Thanks.
