I have a 2012 W212 e class which I‘ve had since September 2012. Only just done 70k miles. Never had the gearbox oil changed. Should I get it done and what sort of price should I be paying please? SE Wales based, any garage recommendations please?

Hello and welcome,

Yes, get it changed (assuming you're wanting to keep it and look after it)

I had a 2016 S212 E350 from new and the gearbox oil and service was done at 5 years old, I had an MB service contract so cannot help with price but not cheap at main dealer I suspect.

It's 10 year old so theoretically this should be it's 2nd oil change , regardless of mileage .

Prices are dependent on where you live and if it's 7 speed or 9 speed , I'm thinking 2012 will be 7 speed , costs should be around £250 to £300.

The 7g+ uses a different fluid to the earlier 7g cars (blue in colour I believe the earlier fluid is red) this is important as the two are not interchangable. I would definitely use someone who is used to doing this work it’s really easy to make a hash of it ie using the wrong fluid or leaving you with an oil leak from the auxiliary pump on the side of the gearbox

I bit of a story with my S212 sept 2012. When bought new I was advised to take the 4yearly service plan because a big service incl the gearbox will be done at the 4th year. Makes it really worthwhile for Mercedes services. It turns out to be every 5th year so if I hadn’t renewed the service plan twice I would have missed out on the 2nd gearbox service at around £500/600. On the 9th year my gearbox started jerking very violently between gears 2/3 and the next service said I needed a gearbox service. I argued being told of the 4 yr interval to no avail so i had to drive extremely gently for over a year before it was done and the violent jerks stopped. Hope I hadn’t done any damage but I was very clearly told at purchase the gearbox was at 4 yr intervals. So do service the gearbox, from my experience. The oil level was low.

Never trust a salesperson
Never trust MB when it comes to gbox service intervals.

It may well be 77k on the 7g+. But thats still alot of miles and some hammering.

Average mileage of say 7k a year over 5 years would be 35k . So yes your recommendation would be correct.
