I have a W213 E22pD with 58k kms on clock. Its 2016 and I have it about 20 months. Since I bought it there has been a whirring noise when driving. Before my warranty expired I brought it back to dealer thinking a wheel bearing had gone. He advised the bearings are adjustable (new one on me) and claimed to have sorted. While initially the noise seemed to be somewhat reduced its still evident.

Wondering is there a central bearing on driveshaft a d gas anyone had any issues or had to replace?

Welcome Keith, Does the whirring noise get worse with speed? Change when you go around corners? Still make a noise when you're stood still and revving? Had the seats down to see if it gets louder? Changed any tyres (are they saw-toothed?)?

I might be wrong, but I can't see how the bearing is adjustable (at least on the front) as it's a solid unit (hub) Four bolts I think attaches it to the suspension system.

Thanks Janchee.
No its not there at standstill. Its not tyre related as Ive changed all in the time Ive owned it. It doesn't get louder or higher in pitch with speed. I've never encountered adjustable bearings either. To me it sounds to be coming from rear centre (suggesting diff or driveshaft) but impossible to be sure from drivers seat. ....

With that E-class, can you put it in green mode and glide? Any change there? Is there someone else who can drive the car and put your ear to the floor in the rear?

I've seen that you've posted on another forum, probably just take it to a good, local Indy :)

Worn wheel bearings tend to make a noise at speed irrespective of whether you're coasting or not. Prop shaft or diff bearings tend to alter in sound if you feather the throttle and take up the drive or coast. Wheel bearings can be adjustable, they usually have a castellated nut & split pin .... It's been years & years since I've had anything to do with one. I'd suspect that the bearing is on its way out if it had needed some adjustment :confused:

I may be guesstimating with this one, but I think the fronts are fixed and the rears are adjustable (by the looks of the parts on Autodoc). They're not that much of an expensive part, so could get them done to rule it out. A trained mechanic should have some techniques on how to diagnose a faulty bearing.

Wouldnt expect any bearings to be gone at 33k kms (when I bought car) and it hasn't really gotten any worse / louder in the 25k kms I've done but still there. Ive another more pressing issue posted in Electrics so looks like it might be heading to garage anyway. If it does I'll get their input.........
Cheers

It does happen occasionally lack of grease, water gets in & freezes. Not adjusted up enough.

If you bought from a main dealer, no harm in contacting them and saying the noise is still there? See what they say?

Adjustable taper roller bearings are usually used on a non driven axle wheel. They are adjusted by simply repacking the wheel bearing with grease and adjusting the lock nut on the stub. You never want the bearing to be too tight, at least 1mm of "play" should be in the taper bearing.

I've noticed a few general garages advise play in the front bearings of Mercedes when they're adjusted perfectly

Bearings, adjustable type ..take out wash inspect, good ,repack add about 1/3to 1/2 interior hub area with grease .reassemble ,tighten briefly to squeeze grease out.back off till free nip up till play ,just gone .good nuff. When poss I will put wheel on with 2 bolt and judge play from that.
Never had a wheel bearing failure.
Fwd bearing design controls play. Rwd same.
