W213 CarPlay

I’m looking at early W213s at the moment. Late 2016 onwards.

As far as I can tell, they come with Audio 20 or COMAND.

Looking at catalogues online, it looks like COMAND came with CarPlay at least as early as Dec 16.

Some questions for those in the know:
- Can Audio 20 have CarPlay enabled? I have seen USB dongles on eBay that, I guess, are rewriting hacked code to the device. Not ideal, but would be keen to know (a) if this solution is any good and (b) whether it would work with some or all versions of W213 Audio 20.
- Do all W213 COMAND units support CarPlay? Dec 2016 is early in production but then that might be for MY2017 cars.
- How bad is Audio 20 and does it cover the basics like rerouting for traffic and full post codes? Assume it isn’t online.
- For all of the above, are they wireless or wired?

I had a July 2016 W213, no CarPlay but the sat nav worked well enough and would reroute. Yes to full postcode

I bought a 2016 W213 with COMAND in the end. Everything is great except CarPlay has an issue where it will crash after 30 mins or so.

Looking online there doesn’t really seem to be a fix, other than to reboot, which is frustrating but I suppose not a big deal. Seems to be very common.

Android Auto is fine.

If you get one from the dealer, make sure they do a software update on it. MB are still releasing updates for the car.

My 2016 Prem+ has CarPlay and Apple Music, Google maps crashes it. Spotify works fine but doesn’t integrate with the car. Android auto cuts off 40% of the screen.

Some Audio 20’s can have factory Apple CarPlay / Android Auto. Look for an E class with option 506.

W213 with Comand can have factory Apple CarPlay / Android Auto (and widescreen cockpit ) retrofitted.

If its crashing then first thing to check is the cable. Try a different cable. If that doesnt fix it, then make sure the firmware is right up to date on the phone and the Comand.
