I'm going to look at a 2001 CL500 tonight.

Is there any issues I need to be aware of beyond the usual checks for suspension / drivetrain clonks and bangs?

Is the engine / gearbox a toughie?
Cats expensive to replace?
Eats brake disks?
Electrical gremlins?

Many thanks.

Look under all 4 corners on the bottom wishbone for any signs of fluid leaking. Also look under the nearside front wheel arch for the same.

Check rust on the rear end around the wheel arches and check that all of the seats and mirrors work as they should.

The CATs do not give a problem on these cars, and the brake parts are not expensive

What're they symptoms / symptom of?

Also didn't realise that rust was an issue on these....

If there is any leaks from the struts, they are expensive at £1k per corner

Yes the rear end arches can rust, but not on all

Check also that the ABC system isnt leaking any hydraulic fluid as parts can be expensive and a bugger to replace. Pumps are not too bad to do on them just a bit fiddly.

Thanks for the responses.

I had alook at it and, as nice as it seems, I think I'll hold out for a CLK500 which is probably as quick but less of a potential liability.
