Hi all,

Hi all,

I saw from previous forum discussions about repairs to the back light of the W220 instrument cluster (seems like a common issue on the W220).

Willlow123 has been mentioned couple of times. Can anyone provide a contact for Willow123 or anyone else that might be able to replace a Type B VOGT transformer on the circuit board of instrument cluster (with the necessary unlocking keys for the cluster)? Within 25 miles of central london would be helpful.

Thanks v much! Cheers.

Actronics in Colchester can repair these back lights.

Thanks! You are so prompt.

I haven't for the "keys" to remove the cluster and unplug it. Do I have to go down to a main dealer to purchase them?

You can buy the hooks on Ebay, not all dealers will sell them.

Tools for removing instrument cluster from 2001 S320

My instrument cluster has 'died' and hence I want to remove it so that I can send it for repair. I found a Youtube video that shows how to remove the cluster. The removal process shown in the video and in a Mercedes manual extract that I found online appears to involve two small keys that are inserted into the slots on each side of the dash. But when I asked Mercedes to send me the tools to remove the panel they sent me two hooks about 6" long. I contacted them and they then sent me the two keys. Well I tried the keys and they don't seem to work. A photograph within this thread shows the two hooks and so I am now not sure which is the correct tool to use? If the keys are correct then what should I try next? Appreciate guidance from forum members. Thanks.

Do you have slots for the keys, they only go in one way round and lock when in.

Yes, there are two slots and I understand that the keys are inserted with the shaped edge inwards. The keys click into place but when I pull them to remove the cluster it doesn't move until I apply a lot of force and then the keys pop out.
So do you believe the hooks (marked 140 589 02 33 00) are not the correct tools? If so, I will persist with the keys. Is there a technique that I should try e.g. pressing slightly inwards when I pull them towards me?? Thanks for your help.

I usually run a flat thin knife around the aperture as they can stick, warming up the surround with a hair drier could help but the dash is easily damaged.

Cluster removal tips

Malcolm, I tried the idea of running something around the edge. Still won't budge. More time and patience required. Thanks again for your help.
