There is a good choice of these at present and prices have softened, as elsewhere, because of fuel prices and VED threats. It is therefore very much a buyers market, although less so on diesels than on petrol cars.

I have not studied the extra features added at the "facelift" - the standard specification is huge on whichever model you look at.

Most desireable extras IMO are Xenon lights (standard lighting is poor for the performance of the car), COMAND both for the facilities it offers and for residual price, telephone pre-fitting, parking sensors (but don't rely on them blindly, they are not infallible), sunroof. In the aftermarket you will often be able to choose from cars with other options too, such as upgraded alloys, heated rear seats, sunblinds, TVs.

There is a good selection available at present. Would be interested to hear what you eventually "land".;)

The alloys look nice (I have them) but the ride quality does suffer.

I have 18s on mine and my clients are amazed how smooth and quiet the ride is. Tints are common as a lot of these are chauffeur cars. As well as the lights, the comand is widescreen and there are material and build quality upgrades on the facelift. IIRC too, the radiator issue doesn't affect facelift cars either. Sadly, mine will be sold soon to make way for a new vehicle (not MB) but I really will miss it.

Great value now and wonderful cars. COMAND is standard on later ones and leather and sunshine roof and loads more. The extras I chose were burr walnut (doesn't look like an S without it IMO), BiXenon, telephone pre wiring, 6xcd changer, parktronic and memory seats. Oh and upgraded alloys with different tyre size front and rear. You may like the look but I think the standard alloys are fine, the ride is better, of course, and the tyres don not wear out so fast or cost so much. On the upgraded alloys the tyres went evry 10/12k miles and cost £1,000 per set. Big item.

Parktronic is really useful with such a big car. Memory seats are fabulous if more than one of you drives.

Just the most memorable, loveable, wonderful car you possibly own. Nothing I've ever owned or driven comes anywhere near close to it. Best saloon in the world? Oh yes.

The funny thing is - in the chauffeur car world, my passengers are happier in the 220 than the 221 and in the right colour with the right wheels the car still attracts many admiring glances. Find an S with as many toys as you can and you will wonder why you didn't do it ages ago.

I've got 18's and rear tints on mine and I think it really makes the car look nice. It's a LWB too and that extra few inches (in my mind) stands it apart from other cars.

Get soft close doors, they never cease to amuse :)

The same went for the W126. You could send a 10 year 500SEL and it was fine, send a 2 year old Lexus LS400 (Gold colour) and it "small" or never quite the same.

Best saloon in the world?? I dont think so.. great car no doubt, my old 97 535i BMW was a much superior car in every way, quieter, smoother, more precise driving car, and much more comfortable, and never let me down,...the merc has a character of its own but it really isnt a £60K + motor...and I base my observations on having driven 4 very different S classes...

I agree on a few points. The E39 was BMWs finest hour but all 3 of mine had various problems, my M5 had loads of issues fixed under warranty. As for cost, my S was 85k. No way would I pay that for it. The plastics are too cheap, and the ambience just isn't there. But I paid 19k for it which makes the shortcomings (quality and reliability) easier to stomach. For my industry passenger space and ride comfort is of primary concern and not even the E39 (excellent though it is) can match the S.

Are you still getting the W221? or have you gone elsewhere?

Nope, 221 has been cancelled due to change of business plan and a hotel group mucking me about. Arnage T is now on the list. And later in the year a Transporter shuttle. Hows yours Russ?

The Caravelle is very nice indeed, a good drive very comfortable and plenty fast. The only downside is the fuel economy of 26 average, on a run we are getting 30 however it soon drops when you go over 65mph.
The transporter has the benefit of 8 or 9 seats however the iso rail seats on the Caravelle are very flash indeed and really comfortable. You can also get at least 8 in by taking out the back seats and sitting/lying on the floor I believe... It also makes a good removal vehicle with 5' x 4' x 4' space with just the last row of seats removed.

Well you could read What Car, Autocar and AutoExpress who all chose it as best saloon in the world. Also many mags in Europe and the US.
