Hi all -
I noticed the other day when I removed my normal gear knob on my W220 merc that the gear shift rod had connections for a start/stop button (like on the versions with the black key cards) -
My VIN decode does not suggest this car has ever had keyless go feature - but I was wondering if there was an option to have a start stop button on the W220 without it having keyless entry/ignition -

The selector module lock is a common failure point, so I would have thought somebody has swapped in a second hand one from a car that did have keyless go.

Yes, that is a possibility - if you mean the plastic lock which can break off inside the shifter (this happened to me, and I just removed it and did not replace it), then swapping the whole unit instead of fixing the plastic part would surely be a costly exercise as the shifter is coded to the VIN (and needs matching ECU/EIS?) - Maybe they swapped out the whole lot due to a failure of one of these parts (Shifter/ECU/EIS) - I wonder if I put a start/stop knob on it would work (once the keys had been turned in the ignition to position II) - seems a fairly pointless experiment - but curious now...

Yes they are coded, but some sellers virginise second hand units to be recoded as new. If you have keyless doorhandles then the car has likely had keyless in the past.

late update to this thread! Seems my vehicle is indeed keyless go - on MBII scanner, I found I could interogate the keyless go module, and the doors have the keyless go aerials within them - What has likely happened is a previous owner has lost the cards, and stuck a standard gear knob on top of the gearstick. - So, I guess I need to find a keyless go knob in the first instance. I know MB do not provide the rectangular black cards any more, but can a new style keyless go key from MB be programmed to allow keyless start (and even entry)?

Yes, but you need to replace the keyless go module with one from a facelift car, and also convince MB to sell you a Keyless go smart key, despite the cars datacard saying you should have a card.....

I have the facelift W220 (2003-10-01), so does that mean it would have been supplied with a keyless go key, and not the oversized credit cards?

I just went back and scanned the car to see if I could get any detail about the keyless go module - and it shows as follows below, but the part number does not seem to exist - and I thought Siemens made the module - Hmmmm IMG_0642.jpg

The MB no listed is not a part number, its an internal module number, even though it shares the same format.

It depends, some facelift cars had cards. If you call MB, ask them if the car comes wiht keys or cards. they will look the vin up on EPC and check, (alternatively, you can do the same on EPC).
