A while ago I posted a thread about how my CLK seemed to occassionally 'drift' ever so slightly when on the motorway. At the time I put it down to cross winds and the like. However last week the car was in for it's MOT, and although it passsed, the tester did note some play in the rear track-rod end. Could this be the cause of my wandering ???

Car did come with a warantee, but not too sure if it will cover this, as the fault is not serious enough for the car to fail it's MOT. What do the experts think?.

Also, am I correct in thinking that this job could be done outside the dealer network. It's a bit of a trip to take my car to the dealer, and we have a very good garage just around the corner. I assume the car would then need one of those hidiously expensive 4-wheel alignment tests.

Any ideas on the cost of parts,/labour also gratefully recieved.

Just saying that a fault on the rear of the car can make the car wander, just as the front can.

By using a part from MB (anyone can fit) the alignment will not need to be touched.

Are these rear track-rod ends adjustable ???... The last one I fitted was on a renault 5, many years ago. In those days you just matched the new one upto the same length as the old one and hoped for the best !!

Any idea of the cost of the original MB part ??

Don't worry about it,you can see in the link that I put up that they are not adjustable.

I think that he had too much to drink

Yes, that tie rod IS ajustable. It is set at an angle & a lowered position so that it adjusts the camber as well as the track. It is the same design "cam" adjustment like that on the 201, 124 etc. I wish they kept them all like that instead of going over to the "offset bolt" arrangement that they have on the front.

My remark about being adjustable was in relation to the way a front track rod adjusts at the start of the thread, and not in the way it is mounted.

Should be OK if you scribe around the cam part to mark its position. Just trying to remember if the bolt at the hub end is easily accessable, any ideas?

When I fitted a new anti roll bar to my V70R that broke when my trolley jack burst the rear suspension had to be moved to get the new one on, I just wire brushed the surrounding area and sprayed it with an old aerosol color. that left the fitting marks clearly visible and easy to set it up into the correct position.

Lots of vehicles tramline on the motorways due to the grooves rolled into the tarmac by the HGVs particularly of course in lanes 2 and 3 :-|

This is the rear from a 208 (I do not know what yours is) this component should not change the alignment and is not adjustable. it has the name tie rod because that is what it does.

MB prices for these things are very good and they only charge a fraction of what Volvo charge me for the same thing.

I only got chance to look at this when I got home (site blocked from work), and I can't really make out which part on the diagram we're talking about. All looks very complicated, and I'm a design engineer!!.

As the part hasn't actually failed, I don't suppose it would be covered on the warantee... what do you think ?

Thanks again for all the helpful advise.

In the square 101 you will see the rod, any play in the ball is a failure.
