I'm looking to move from a W210 1999 E300Td to an ML ... and am busy researching the differences in different models, features, options etc. I came across a (rival?) forum the other day which suggested that the large sunroof is a nightmare and should be avoided at all cost. Is this scaremongering? I wish i could find a link to the thread but google isn't getting me there, it contained a massive list of things that will go wrong with your ML as soon as you buy it, but i would prefer your guys opinion on this ... it can't be that bad can it?

Should i avoid the panorma sunroof completely ... is it that prone to failure? Is it that expensive to repair?

I can only afford up to about an 01 .. right before the facelift came out ... am i courting danger at that age?

Never buy one with a panoramic roof.

Expensive to repair and are generally very poor.

Playing around in one the other day, I did feel that the glass roof was of no benefit to the driver as its too far back to be of any use.

Thanks for that advice ...the other thing that was on my mind was the pretty big difference in price between the petrol and diesel engines... i do normal mileage or less than normal, so was wondering if buying a newer one but petrol and accepting the lower fuel economy would amount to the same money over a couple of years. Were all of the MLs made in the USA, or were the diesels made in Europe? Are the problems that affect MLs more petrol centric than diesel? Am i mad to go for one before the "facelift"?

Hello,

Having come from convertibles I loved the panaramic sunroof but like you was advised against it. As it happends this option was not available on the facelifted model which I went for.

The newer ones have an option of a glass roof and again I would like this but when searching for my current car a ML350 Inspiration they are rare anyway and one with a roof just didn't turn up.

Being completly honest the pre facelifted ones did not get a good report when introduced and there are threads to avoid them. Now thats easy to say but different if the budget doesn't stretch.

What I would do is work your millage out say 28mpg for the 270Cdi and 22 for a ML320. Also factor in you will probably pay more 1k-1.5k more for the derv. I get 25mpg out of my 350 (and the engine is actually a 3.7). Some 270 owners only get 28. Ok through town it is probably doing 18-21 but overall work your figures out.

Easy for me to say but if you can I would try and stretch to the facelifted one. I love my bus great to drive.

Saying all that my father in law has a X reg ML270cdi and when looking for one I drove one straight after arriving in mine. Goes well and has a nice sounding engine, certainly inside you would not know its a derv.

good look searching

ps, some ML320's with LPG already fitted? could be an option?
