Hi all,

Yesterday I started the car in the morning for the school run, no probs (as per usual). Later, when starting, the ABS light stayed on and the revs at least doubled?! In Park/Neutral the 'tickover' is 2000+ :(

This morning, cold start was fine. Car ran as normal to the shops..
10 minutes later when I re-started the car the 'warm-start' problem was there - ABS light & high revs.

I don't know if this has any bearing on the problem: I need to top up the anti-freeze mix every 4-6 weeks . I'm also losing a few drips of oil from the gearbox seal, too (another ongoing problem). But there's no oil / water discolouration(?), so as long as she runs 'as normal' I haven't tampered with the old girl.. Very little maintenance carried out in recent months :(

I've got everything crossed that this is a simple fix.. the Merc didn't cost a lot but it's already reached the "can't do without" status!

Any help appreciated..

(Sorry if it's the wrong area to post)

Check the OVP relay they get bad dry joints, that will be the fix.

You can take it out and re solder or buy a new one

Hi
Do the solder joints get bad and dry over time?

Yes the do solder just seams to erode away though it cant really,

These thing were flow soldered and not enough was used for this application.

simply remove the case, re solder every joint so that it bright and shinny will solve the problem.

The Irish once were not too bad, the Austrian ones are the bad ones

Could just be the 10amp fuse if you're lucky.

My W124 had poor starting but ran fine when warm, accompanied by the ABS light staying on.

I had previously cleand the connections which worked for a couple of months, on inspection I found it was the original item (made 04\1989) but now I just replaced it with a newer second hand part (quoted £70 for a new unit by MB!!) and since fitting. all is well.

Hope it works for you.
