After getting into my ML320 and starting the engine, i noticed a yellow warning light in the bottom left hand corner of the instrument which has BAS ESP on it.
I dont drive the car very often but my wife does, and she assures me it has came on before, i have checked the manual that came with the car but can see no mention of this light.
Could anyone let me know what this light is and what it relates to on the vehicle? The car is a 1999 ML320 petrol.
Many thanks

Brake Assist System and Electronic Stability Program.

I'm guessing a fault has occured with it.

Someone more technical would be more helpful here, but that's what the lights mean.

Agree with Stu on the meanings,

I believe the light comes on momentarily to indicate an intermittent fault, if it stays on that's not so good. Happened with my car (same year, different model) Quick chat with the techies, replaced brake switch - no more fairy light.

I'm willing to guess this could be the fix with yours, the brake switch is cheap enough from MB anyway.

The guys are spot on with the meanings.

And the brake light switch is very common, and would be my first guess as well.

Maybe try turning the steering lock to lock as well to reset the steering angle sensor.

If neither of these work then A diagnostic check to read the fault codes will be required

Hi Rabt

I am a new owner of a 230 Kompressor auto and I had this problem within my first week of ownership. Now have other problems but thats beside the point.

My light came on and I got around this by making sure that when I start the engine my foot is fully flat on the brake before starting. Light hasn't come on since. I got this infor from the forum, seemed to work for me.

The owner book did said you need to turn the steering extreme left and right if the battery has been disconnected. You next best bet is the diagnostic kit. Malcolm may be right it the brake light switch, I would say the steering sensors.

Many thanks for the replies and help on this light. I drove the car tonight and the light has now gone out and my wife said it had not came on today, i have told my wife that should the "lovely yellow coloured light" come on again to try some of the suggestions i have been given and the condition persist, i will post as to what the definite problem was and maybe this could help others if they have the same problem.
Thanks again

If poss get the fault codes read, agree with all the above but also take in-to-account a rpm sensor, seen a few of them this year!!

ive had that light come on before on a couple a cars . I think it can be moisture or loose connectors cos i never bothered to fix mine when they came on and they went off themselves unless the bulb blew out in the dash :lol:

These lights have been playing up the last few weeks on our ML270 whenever either the ABS or the ESP is activated and not going out at all until it is switched off. The other day, the ABS pump began to run continually and intermitantly with a mind of its own even with the engine switched off. Mercedes Benz have put it on their diagnostics and 'think' it may be the ABS pump which 'may' need replacing!! Has anyone got any knowledge or experience of this problem. Is the ABS pump module prome to failure or what would cause these problems?

Sorted thanks, MB cleared all the codes and we went through all the relays.... again. The ABS pump relay has been changed and ESP, ABS BAS lights have all gone out and normal sservice is resumed without the need to replace the pump!!
