Welcome bikesnoopy, Like you I`ve got a bike. In the shed for nice days, a 500cc 1954 Norton. I`m too old to go fast as I don`t bounce like I did years ago.

Like the guy says, bikes have a power to weight ratio that AMG owners couldn't dream of. E.g. my 16 year old YZF600, only worth about a grand, but does 0-60 in under 4 seconds as well as 50mpg. Plus zero maintenance...

Sounds like you might be able to share some useful insights into dealership motivation/behaviour :D

Good grief yes.

You just wouldn't believe some of the boll**ks we hear & the general disrespect the "average" car owner shows to their vehicle. . .

Yes, the thing is with cars, drivers are always impressed by a swift 0 - 60 time of prehaps 5 or 6 seconds.
Most middleweight to large bikes will do well over 60 in first gear & around 100 in 2nd, so 0 - 60 is largely irrelevant on a bike - but a reasonably quick one will achieve 0 - 60 in 2.5 seconds.
I think we tend to think of 0 - 100, 0 - 120, & 0 - 150, as a more useful measure of the bike's performance - most "average" bikes reaching 120 in under 10 seconds & 100 in less time than it takes a very fast car to reach 50.

And all this with 50 - 60 mpg possible at sane speeds. . . but the best bit is that you can buy sub 11 second quarter mile times, 0-130 in 10 seconds & 175+ top speeds for less than a grand.
Amazing. . . :D

Mmm . . . Not sure about the zero maintenance bit. Modern sport and hypersport bikes cost a fortune to maintain and that's just in servicing every 4k miles. Dont even start me on tyres. A rear will cost £120 - £140 + and will last around 3k miles depending on how you ride. NOT a cheap hobby is motorcycling :( BUT worth the cost for the mind numbingly awesome acceleration and top speed :)

I used to get through a rear tyre every 1000 miles on my modified GSXR1100 @ £130 a pop. . .

It is true, its not cheap to own a big sports bike.
Chain & sprockets at £160 odd, brake discs at £400 a pair, oil & filter changes every 3000 miles, valve clearance checks/adjustments every other service. . . it goes on . . .
However, you do save on fuel & for an old guy like me, insurance is a fraction of car insurance. . . but dont get me started on road tax. . . grrrrrr !
