What is your average MPG?

I bet you are not a 40+ mpg owner?

It would be interesting to see the mpg averages from those getting 8-10k miles compared with those getting 20k miles or more.

Good point - I managed 40/40 in a W 220 (320 CDI) - averaged 40 mpg and tyre life was 40,000 miles, even wear by tyre rotation at services. Brake pads still originals at 54,000.

You don't need to drive spectacularly to get there faster. I would be fairly certain that 47P2 would echo my comments, and possibly improve on the numbers.

Just bought an 07 plate 320 CDi CLS and absolutely love it so far. I had to let my W202 CDi estate go with 235,000 on the clock, what a beauty that was, 48mpg, and 65,000 miles from a set of regularly rotated tryes (front to back swap).

According to the CLS computer, I got 46.2 mpg for a 100 miles journey between Swindon and Horsham deliberately setting the cruise to 70mph on the M4. A bit less on the return which is net uphill and I cruised at 75mph (allegedly).

Bought the CLS with 4mm of original tread on the back and new front tyres after 23,500 miles. Don't think I'll be getting 65,000 miles out of a set though ! With all that torque on tap, it's just too tempting and wonderful to use it !

I can only manage 10k on my rears, and 12k front so you are doing well

Update: just clearing 30,000 miles on the rears, 3.5mm left on each.

Do you think I need to use that right pedal a bit more? ;)

Definitely sounds like it, just cleared 30k on our CLS and it's ready for its 3rd set of rears (it has the wider rears which do wear faster though)

May I chip in with a recommendation for Chris of

http://www.centregravity.co.uk/

The man knows his onions and will carry out the most comprehensive geometry setup ever.
I took my 996 C2 to him a couple of times for a geo and was simply amazed with the results. Not only will it handle so much better but of course will promote even tyre wear.

Have also used Chris on a 911. He is definitely awesome with a Porsche. But may be overkill taking Mercedes to him. I took my two Mercs to Wheels in Motion. They seem to know Merc geo inside out. Although am still not convinced about the results on the CLS. They almost set it up to steer right on a straight road, to try to overcome the camber of the road pulling you left. Which at times feels slightly unnatural when the car unexpectedly pulls right. Did take it back to them and they looked at it again and it improved to some extent.

michelin energy original tyres on our clio front changed at 48k with 2mm. Rears would have lasted past 60, one suffered a puncture and the others sidewall was deteriorating so changed.

I have 23k miles on my summer tyres and they are at 4mm and 5mm respectively from rear ( swapped a whiles back)

Just taken my winters off which must have 5-6mm of tread after 20k miles and 2 winters which I didn't expect tbh

I only ever get 8-10,000 out of mine I was told it was because of the soft tyre compound. I have no idea if that is true.

I would love to find a tyre that lasts upto 20,000 miles t least.

If anyone can find a brand that lasts on a cls please let us all know!!!

When you have owned high powered motorcycles and some one says 8000 mile on tyres you know they are talking about the 3rd set, or at least 3 rears and possibly 2 fronts.

I get 18 to 20,000 out of a set normally. This set will see 18k just but then I didn't keep a proper eye on pressures or geometry so as a result my rears are a bit thin in the middle and the fronts are scrubbed on the inside edge. If I'd been more careful I would have cracked 20k easy.
That said, my old 202 was lighter and a lot less powerful with much narrower tyres and yet because it was used mostly round town I used to get 9k from a set.
So like mpg there is no such thing as average. Just too many variables.

Perhaps the new tyre ratings will help on this tyre wear thing, without doubt wider rear do not last as long 4 all round the same size.

You've made several posts but I don't think have said what make/model/size your tyres are - would you mind sharing?

Frightening how many drivers don't "keep a proper eye" on their tyres. I wonder what else they don't keep a proper eye on??

Wiper blades, bulbs, but we do have warnings for those. seat belts as well.

It is very easy to check the tread depth from the sides to the centre and adjust the air pressure to keep the wear even. More wear on one side of the tread to the other is camber angle wrong and if more than 1mm of difference then it needs correcting.

CLS 320 CDI...2009 Front tyre wear

Today my local garage fitted two new front tyres as the other tyres have only lasted 10,000 miles and were worn down to the chords on the inner edge approx 25mm and had heat cracks, but the average tyre tread depth was 5mm all over the rest of the tyre

The garage checked the tracking, which was spot on, also they ordered a set of MB camber bolts, they were delivered this afternoon but would not fit them because they said they could not see how they would help the adjustment?

Does anyone have advice on this matter?

If the inside corner scrubbed off then surely the camber is out, is the 5mm even across the rest of the tread

Had exactly the same happen on our CLS a few months ago, I'd be fairly certain as it was on mine that your geometry is out. Tony at Wheels in Motion sorted ours out and it's now perfect (highly recommend taking your car there if you can, he's in Buckinghamshire) - you will need the camber bolts to make the necessary adjustments, Tony fitted them on our car.
