I don't know why but I thought I would try and manually open my Drivers Door and Boot with the mechanical key!

"Wrong"

Both were seized!

Probably because they had never been opened with anything other than the Remote Key since the car was new (1998 C200). Lots of WD40 and Pushing the key gently in and out, and turning the key and eventually they freed up ,and now all is well.

Glad I never had to do that in a car park late at night if the remote never worked!

I shall make this a regular task!

Now that they are freed up,get some white grease and apply it before the WD40 dries up

actually that's a good point, my passenger door does have the mechanical key and its covered, i've tested it and it works fine however the boot does not seem to operate with the key (feels very stiff) so I guess its clogged with dirt etc.

is the one mechanical key (same key i use to open the passenger door with) also supposed to be used to open the boot ?

cheers

On my car there is only one mechanical key that slides out of the remote key Fob. And yes that fits the boot lock as well............... Or it did eventually after I freed it.

Purchase of the covers seeems the solution.

Another bit of prudent regular but neglected maintenance is to run the rear windows up and down a couple of times a month. These often don't get used for very long periods and can eventually sieze up through lack of use.

The best thing are the little round plastic things that pop into the lock from MB only cost pence and, if anyweb manages to open his boot with the key, they would stop all of the salt spray that attacks the rear of the car in Sweden.

They are tiny and round, a must for any MB

These blanks were for the door lock(s) but as would serve equally as well in the boot lock.

Hi jberks

Presumably the window-winder mechanisms are sealed-for-life units and only require periodic preventative maintenance of the type you describe?

Point of information ... I once saw my indie do something clever and he made my windows go up and down together using just one control ... or did I imagine it?

Hi Phil
On my E210 I press and hold the unlock button on the key whilst pointing it at the drivers door and after about 5 seconds all the windows go down until I release the button, and the same with the lock button to make them go up.
Regards
Mike

Hi Mike

Well I'm blowed, I never knew that! I must try this tomorrow to see if it works on my W202. I can see the logic and the good sense of such a feature. Thanks for that. You learn something new every day.

Hi All I have an 2006 AClass with the same problem siezed lock barrel.I tried wd 40 and silicone spary but so far still no joy. Before I continue on with the wd40 can I just ask the key goes in the barrel fine and turns to the right with no effort at all but this has no effect on the lock however. If I try to turn the key to the left its solid. Is this normal behaviour or is it the wrong key. Thanks for any info Steve

Any car that has a small square "window" next to the key barrel has this feature. Not on 168, 170 or 163.
