Hi,

I am bout to buy a used MB car and know that at times it can be expensive to repair. I am wondering if it is worth buying a warranty for 12 months? Does anyone have any experience or can recommend a good company for warranty. As I cannot find any information on MB website regarding warranty for used car. (Will be getting one month warranty from a dealer)

If I was you, I wouldn't be doing a deal with the dealer unless there was at least a 6 month warranty.

the car is 2001 so it their policy not to provide cover any further than one month. :( hence why I am wondering if it is worth trying to get another warranty via different company.

dont touch any after market warranties. Cheaper ones aren't worth the paper they're written on and expensive ones are prohibitively so.
Warranty direct list what is covered. What they don't say is that 99% of the car doesn't come under the list and even then, its your problem to prove that the problem is down to them.
Easier, safer and cheaper to bank what you would have spent on the warranty.

Can see your point of view but this is noting more than an insurance policy.

Typical quote is about £350; compare this against a gearbox repair in the region of £2000 - you take your chances.

For the record, I don't use them but understand those who want to pay for some peace of mind.

It might be their policy, but it doesn't have to be yours. Don't forget, you're the one with the money.

I agree it provides peace of mine. The problem is that with all the clauses and sub clauses, even with a gearbox you can be left out of pocket. The problem is that these policies list the items that are covered, down to the sprocket, widget or bolt. So, if one of those has gone great. But, to find this out, you must pay someone to strip it, incurring the cost. If some other item has gone, you're then on your own and have just poaid someone to strip a dead gearbox when you could have bought one from a breaker.

Also, the list of items isn't as comprehensive as it looks. For example, the dash cluster isn't covered. My 210's had a fault (£600 if I'd had it done) and MB replaced the one in my 211 last year (£900 if I'd been paying!), so they can fail. When I looked again at the list, with this in mind, the list of items not covered is vastly longer than you'd expect.

I paid £300 for my WD warranty, then had to pay out a further £600 for parts and labour for issues that weren't covered.

I'm not down on warranties altogether. I have an after market warranty on my E270 at the moment. But, that was one supplied by the dealer that states that it covers everything except a specified list of consumables, tyres, pads and the like. So, exhaust isn't covered but the cat is for example. This cover cost me £600 2 years ago so its a lot more than WD etc but at least there's a solid chance of being covered. That said, if nothing goes wrong in the next 6 months, I'd have been better putting the money in the bank.

Even then, the prices seem to be more prohibitive these days. I was recently offered something similar on the Landrover for £950!. I refused.

Hi, one month warranty is appaling, last time a dealer tried this with me I just told him that I do about 10,000 miles a year and if he didn't feel confident enough in the car to cover that mileage for one year, I didn't want the car and would go elswhere, I got 12 months in the end. Suggest you try it, you have nothing to loose.
