So what is indeed the correct method to wash the car - after rinsing, do you get out your trusty sponge and bucket and start at the bottom and work your way up or start at the roof and work down?

I was told that that starting at the bottom was the correct method because as you work your way up the body the dirty water etc runs over the clean paintwork much easier. Discuss...

Morning Davidsl500,
I was told the opposite. Start at the top and work your way down. As your car is always worse the near the road, you start with a clean sponge working your way down, thus not taking your dirty sponge over the cleaner areas of your car. This came from a retired funeral director who's cars were always gleaming :D

I always start at the top, I clean the car in three stages one rinse with warm water, two the proper wash with warmer water and the detergent then the rinse off with tepid water, washing out the sponge between phases. Somtimes it'll give a it forth phase with cold water and then wipe off the excess with a rubber flexi-blade.

Mike.

I actually always start at the top and work down anyway. I also use different sponges for the sills etc to the top sections as well. I can understand the theory to the starting at the bottom technique but didn't like the potential risk of dragging grit etc up the body. I find the microfibre cloths are better than the traditional chamois for drying off - havent tried a blade.

The correct way to wash a car is to start at the bottom and work up the reason for this is when you start at the top and work down the car gets wet and you cant see all the dirt and when the car dries you then see the bits you have missed so that is why you always start at the bottom and work up
I used to work with a proffesional valating company and the correct proceedure is to youse two buckets of water dip sponge in first bucket and wash bottom of car then put sponge in second bucket and rinse then back into first bucket and wash more of the car this way your car will be very clean and all you have to do is chamois it of and you dont have any steaks or any other marks on your car.

This forum is getting very sad now wanting to know what way to wash a car does it really matter as long as you get it clean with no streaks. Let?s face it you must have had a sad Christmas to come up with a question like that. The next thing that will be asked what side of the car do you start washing first

Well thank you for your coments gentlemen. I am sorry 190 that you find the topic not up to the standard you would like to see. It may not be very technical but I am sure that there are many professional valeters who would disagree with the little importance that you place on the subject.

I am not having a sad christmas - and surely if you consider my post as some sort of sign of one then equally, you reading and replying to it must also be seen in the same light?

What water should you use when washing you car should it be cold hot or warm.
Should you use detergent and should you hose your car before washing it to remove loose debris from the paintwork and what?s about washing your car that has got this paint shield protection on [cling film] should the water be hot cold or warm, I would be afraid it would remove the paint shield from my car.    :x :p    8) :? :D :) :(

Why not try using rain water as well as this creates a nice finish. It is not sad it is that part of the year when people become bored and spend time on their car exercising Xmas cleaning gifts.

Well now that we are at it, what do you think of carwashing machines ? I always use them, they seem to do a nice job, allthough of course not up to the standard of a manual wash.

Car washing machines worry me :? I've heard of so many horror stories of badly scratched paintwork, broken wing mirrors etc.
I've also heard about the jetwash stations, the one that pulls your car through the wash system, can damage auto transmissions! I don't know if this is correct or not, but I'm not willing it try it just in case?
