I have a c180 P reg auto, no aircon.

Tonight we had a really bad thunderstorm and I had to go out to pick up my wife from town.

First thing I noticed was that I had no heater controls - fan would not work on any settings - hot or cold.

I parked up, turned off the engine and restarted thinking it maybe a glitch.

I checked my side of the car floor - it was dry. I checked the passenger side footwell and it was soaking wet - so I am assuming the heater matrix has blown.

Any ideas - the water in the footwell in clear and does not smell.

:)

I suspect the drains under the bonnet on the passenger side are blocked with crap. Have a poke around and see if you can dislodge anything

The water will fall into your blower motor (on passenger side) and cause it to stop working.

The drain is blocked in the air intake box under the bonnet near the bulk head. remove the grill and check the drain pipes

Had the same problem a while ago and it turned out to be blocked drains. You will need to clear them out and ensure that the water is escaping o.k. ( try a hose pipe running down windscreen, ) unfortunately  you will have to remove all the carpet and sound proofing foam etc. as it won't dry out naturally - and this will eventually smell - plus there are some electronic components under all this which may suffer from the damp environment.

I pulled back my carpets this morning (I need to remove the Blower Regulator tonight, see seperate thread), and noticed that it was slightly damp in the footwell. We do have some trees on our road, and suffered with blocked drains on my previous ZT. Last time I used a length of old coathanger, and the MGForums provides a very good DIY guide to removing the various grilles etc.

Do we have any links showing where the drain holes are on my car (2000 CLK) and perhaps an idiots guide to cleaning them ??

I've now had a good search of the forum, and it seems to me that sometimes you need to remove the grille, and sometimes you don't. Also there appears to be some confusion over the number of drains on different models..

Am I correct in assuming that my 2000CLK only has 1 drain, on the near side, and that this can be cleared without removing the grille ???

Once again, I diagram/schematic would be a great help...:D

water in the footwell

As it has been lovely and sunny today - I cleared the crud out of the car, which caused the water in the footwell last night.

Heres what I did.

1. I removed the top grill and then undid the 10 screws from the second cover.
2. I noticed a huge amount of crap (leaves, sticks, mud) on the nearside of the car.
3. Using a stick I scraped at the crap and then used the vacumn to get rid of some. I them used our high powered steam cleaner to remove and loosen the rest.
4. Out came the hose and let it flusj the crud down the drain hole.
5. Next I removed the 2 x panels from under the car behind the front mudflaps and flushed out all the crap from there.
6. I reassembled in reverse order. Before I put the two grills back in place though, I sprayed them with silicone spray to ease water run off in the future.

Jobs a good 'un.

While I ws doing that I also took a tip from this site as well and greased the wiper motor. Thought may as well.

However, the ventilation still does not work. I have checked all the fuses - they are fine and the relays seem fine.

Any ideas why it won't blow?

Thanx for the info on the water in the footwell problem.

Only with a voltmeter to know where the voltage has stopped

Usually it is the resistor pack on the bottom of the blower motor.

heater won't blow.

Guess what?

Went out this morning, turned on the blower controls to see if they would and hey! Presto they did. Everything is back to normal.

I would assume that water got into the blower motor and caused it to cut out.

Not enough to blow a fuse or kill the resistor pack, but enough to stop it working till it dried out.

Thanx everyone - you are the best.:)

Thats great news, all of these run through your mind, I was not brave enough to suggest this this time.
