Afternoon all

Just got another A class so that’s 3 in the family. developed a noise hard to describe
Is there any way to upload a video so folks can hear ? I clicked on the camera icon but that only allows photos which you can’t hear

Suspect pulley bearing .bit of a bugger to do I just did them on my w168 2nd time in 8 yrs .not so bad if u can get car in the air and not in any hurry.I made up a few spanners to help. Think 169 near same ? Check everywhere else first, a bugger if that dont sort it .tho knowing thats done will give some piece of mind .

It’s a tricky one. Was worried it maybe gearbox or camshaft noise. Took a chance buying it but very cheap.

That’s me. Take a chance. There’s not much that can’t be fixed .
I’m hoping it’s this pulley but got to wait till Jan to get up in air.

Diesel autos dont give a lot of bother.its the petrols that have the rep for splittin trans drum.
Get yr self a belt ,set of pulleys.n when old stuff off spin alt and ac clutch if ac fitted all good put back forget for 10 yr.I made spanner that had fitting to hold ratchet tension belt .used that to pull tension
pulley full off n keep it there.made life easier and extended ratchet ring to get top idler bolt out. Good luck.

If yr feeling up to it water pump as well. I will do mine in summer
Whilst not exactly yr mod check yr crank pulley there are stories of the flex material between two pieces delaminating

I’ve seen a timing chain rub through the cover and eventually leaked oil .
It sounds very loud in the video , almost like a chain is clapping the cover .
I guess when it’s in the air and a stethoscope is needed to home in on the noise.

It’s a weird one indeed. Had a slack timing chain last year on other one we have but always threw up the error codes without fail. I’m wondering if the hydraulic external fitted tensioner has seized up. On every A class we had they all were rock solid.
