Came home tonight, cruising at a steady 80 in the pouring rain and some prat decided to wait until I got close and then pull out doing a steady 60. At the same moment I found myself on a flooded bit of road and felt the back end go light as I found myself forced to do the one thing I didn't want to do in such circumstances and backed off. A split second later the little amber light flashed and she just ran straight as a die.
I often take all the wizadry for granted but I love this car.

I live in the country - the roads aren't so good so the amber light comes on regularly. It also comes on a lot more when my tyres need changing-it's one of the ways I know new ones are required.

We take a lot of the standard MB features for granted. However they are really nice to have when we need them.
I saw a W211 E270 last Thursday on the M4 that although he had managed to stop and avoid the accident in front, (no doubt due to the brake assist) the Ford Escort behind him could not stop and rammed him up the back. The E's bumber was damaged but the Escort was undriveable.

With all of the new things waiting around the corner its going to get interesting over the next few years. Re Jberks, an MB will seldom embarras you, the weight alone helps.

Amber light is ESP which covers traction control and ABS. You normally see it when accellerating hard on poor surfaces or braking hard again on poor surfaces.

Driving home from Inverness on the A9 on Sunday night, in heavy rain a red deer jumped out and stopped right in front of me. Thanks to the (in-)famous "elk test" standard the ESP let me steer around the animal with no excitement! What a car indeed (C220CDI saloon). In anything other than a MB I am sure it would have been a right off.

As with many recent inovations ESP is fantastic and will attempt to correct understeer, oversteer, roll over, wheel spin, skidding and other things us mortals probably don't even know about. I remember Clarckson testing one of the big (AMG?) mercs a few years back and saying if would be undrivable without ESP and it would end up in a ditch everytime you touched the throttle (a bit like Eurofighter). It is even fitted into sprinter vans as standard and I think it will be available with aftermarket bodied chassis vans on the new sprinter range.

How come it seems to be ultra reliable (when did you last see a thread about faulty ESP) when so many other technical innovations just cause major headaches once released into the real world? If mercedes could build ESP reliability into the rest of the car they may even be able to beat Toyota in the satisfaction surveys.

Glad you are still with us Berks, there's so many numptys out there you have to have have the sixth sense to survive unscathed.

i dont think honda do the ELK test as my sister has hit 2 (she thinks they are picking on her!:-? )
You often hear of awsome things that modern cars can do, but to get confirmation of it is good news.
