Now my mobilio is defunct I need to get breakdown cover. I'm doing 30k pa so whilst she's running fine, anything could happen.
There seems to be a huge range of options out there.
All I want is to make a call and have someone come out, wherever I am, at home or elsewhere, try to get it going and if not, tow wherever I want.
The AA and RAC do this but charge a fortune. Even green flag is £91 for a year's cover.

What do you guys use?

Anything with your insurance company? I get it free on my bikes.
I used to have AA before having a Mercedes and used to negotiate a discount, I never had to use them so cannot comment on how they perform.

I have "free" AA cover (person, not car, so works for self or spouse in any car they may be travelling in) with LloydsTSB Gold Service Bank account. There is other stuff too - travel insurance, cell phone insurance, insurance/stoppage of lost credit cards. I got in when there was no monthly fee and have kept the old Ts & Cs (much to their chagrin!). If you use all of these things, having them done through a bank account may suit you.

Some motor insurers used to offer breakdown cover - worth looking on something like Confused.com to see if they advertise that as part of the insurer's proposition - or you may have to "refine your search" and press play again.

I've been with the AA ever since I started driving, 25 years now. They are expensive, but worth it if you breakdown on a motorway miles away from home. As I have always had cars at least 10 years old, I have used them a number of times and have always had excellent service.

I tend to get whats on offer with the car insurance, normally around 50 - 60 but £120 for the same cover if you go direct to AA etc

On the subject of breakdown cover, has anybody had experiance of the so called MB cover that is built into the cost of regular servicing by an MB dealership in particular when towing a caravan. Needless to say the dealership assured us when we purchased the car, that we would be covered in such circumstancies. I cant help having a feeling.. That should such a recovery be neccessary resulting in a tow to dealership that on seeing the caravan attached they would back off. Your comments would be most welcome

If that's all you want, who do you bank with? My bank (LloydsTSB) account offers a number of 'free' (included in the monthly fee) benefits, including both AA breakdown cover and AA travel insurance.

It may be worth seeing what your bank can offer, and perhaps choosing an account that gives you these benefits cost effectively?

I have the same benefits with HSBC Premier account. The worldwide travel insurance pays the £9. 95 the account costs to service. The "free" AA cover is a bonus too.

One reason I stick with dealer servicing. Good value when you add in the benefit of free breakdown here and in Europe for me and wife and any other drivers too.

Thanks guys.

On this one.... I have a premier account too - I flicked through the book and looked on the net but can't see any breakdown cover on this account.
I will get the Mrs to ring the manager...
It will be a bit of a bonus if I already have it :)
Failing that I don't think my insurer offers anything, though its worth a phone call, but I think the Mrs' insurer does and her renewal is up at the end of the month so we'll see what they're offering.

Yes Hawk. It was when I was getting a service every year. But now I'm looking at 2+ a year, the £400+ saving is too big to ignore.

I used Mobilio once and must say they were excellent. Regular calls, often just to tell me who would be ringing next, car collected from my house, rental car delivered. Able to drop off the rental at the dealer when I collected mine. Given that the car was driveable when I called them I felt a real fraud, but technically it wasn't safe (broken spring - but I had just done 100 miles on it) so it was ok. Really can't complain and a service like that from the AA would cost a fortune.

Hi,

I'd strongly recommend reading the relevant page on the MoneySavingExpert website.

Fwiw, I had the Pay & Reclaim £37 full service for a couple of years. With this, although you call a central number when you need help, a local recoverer comes out to you; you pay them at the time (you can use a credit card) and then reclaim. I used the service a couple of times and never had any problems - claiming was easy, payment was prompt and I had it long before the credit card bill needed paying.

The only reason I swapped away from it this year was they wanted £60 to include European Recovery and I could get the same benefits from this year's car insurer for less than £45.

Hth.

Regards,

I pay £40 to the RAC per year,,it is heavily discounted as I have been with them for years and run 2 cars. With 2 cars Mobilo is no good on the other one

Forget the AA and RAC and sign up with the ADAC . Pick the PartnerPlus option and you get full UK and European breakdown cover for less than €100 pa. Ring them and the AA will turn up. Happy days. :D
