Sorry to drop a dig at your beloved MB dealer Hawk, but we have a 210 at the mo, which has full service history from the said dealer, last one done a few weeks ago, cost of £450,

Now why do we have a car with the said history, which needs the brake pipes running front to back, rusted to hell!! and the self leveling pipes burst due to rusted through!!!

Again i ask, for £450 pound, dont you think your dealer might have just notice that, and offered to replace the pipes!!! No, instead it lets him down and pours oil all over his drive!!

Again, you forget what my last job was, do you want a list of every time i was called out to a job and was told "this was only serviced yesterday"!!

You love that dealer, i dont have a problem with that!!

But Dave and myself started out so people didnt get ripped off and they didnt have the problems after using main dealers!!

You go on about dealer servicing so much, belive me, its not all its cracked up to be!! 50% of my jobs, used to be down to the dealers getting it wrong!!! and i having to go out and correct it!!!

Im not just having a go at "your" dealer, as i covered 5 in the area, but there was always one which got more complants than the others!!!

Would you like to guess which one Sir!!!

I really don't think you should do this as an ex employee. I wonder if you'd like them to start slagging off your work.

If you do not do bad work, you do not get slagged off

Well I get so angry at all of the how good his dealer is on every post, when they could not fix his.

Let Hawk tell us, or I will

Hawks excellent info that he post on the new car front and updates is all spoilt by these post.

And you tell them about the substantial goodwill contribution from MB on your car. Thank goodness the previous owner had a good MB service record.

As for SAM/UNIT slagging off his ex employer and a direct competitor, I think that is unprofessional. His remarks are libellous and could lead to his being sued -and the forum for publishing them.

Or try a proper Mb dealer. Mine would have replaced the pipes.

I'm up early this morning to take mine back to my MB dealer to have the auto box oil level checked. I checked it myself & it is low, the gear change is no longer smooth & the car has went into limp mode. MB changed the oil & filter a few weeks ago.

The black plastic plug covering the dipstick tube is the same one the car left the factory with over 3 years ago and was damaged the first time they checked the oil level. Despite 3 services with MB since then, they have never replaced the damaged plug. £500 a go servicing & failing to change a 99p item is unforgiveable.

You can recommend MB servicing as much as you like, but you will never convince me. As the car is now out of warranty, it has to be a good indy from now on.

Drove the car to MB this morning & waited in reception.
Car returned 45 minutes later, no leaks, gearbox oil level was correct, no fault codes sir. Road tested car, everything is fine, if symptoms return bring it back in.

Drove car home, gear changes back to normal, a very different car from an hour ago. Got home & checked gearbox oil level with dipstick, sitting at correct level when it was low on oil a few days ago. Go figure!

Don't beat yourself up on this.

You have highlighted the underlying basic truth the the buyer must beware.

A good garage is a good garage, whether it be a dealer or and Independent.

A cr*p garage is a cr*p garage, whether it be a dealer or an Indy.

Sadly, you either need good luck, or a fine sense to anticipate how competent the provider will be, or experience, to differentiate between the good and the others. The name above the door will not necessarily do that for you.

In your case it was unfortunate experience which has led to you knowing, in hindsight that the Indy was not so good.

It has served to polarize the debate in the Forum between Dealerships and Indies, but as my comments above suggest, neither group has the franchise on excellent quality, so people will always speak as they find, based on their experience.

Finally, the garage and the MOT inspector are looking for different things, so what one will accept may upset the other. In this case, the Indy noted corrosion on the pipes and advised that would be OK, especially if wax oiled. The MOT man has a simple rule, do not accepted pipes with corrosion. It is not a straightforward right and wrong issue, but whilst the Indy may or may not have been correct, that is conjecture. The MOT outcome is hard fact, rightly or wrongly, so that is fact. And fact wins.

So it has been a good debate and lots of important points have emerged. Only by airing these things can we hope to improve and as better customers, we will raise the game of the providers too.

I think a point may have been missed, the Merc Indy told me the pipes were slightly corroded and an oiling would cure, solve, the problem. The MOT garage rang me at home and invited me to the garage to show me the pipes were dangerous, not slightly corroded, dangerous!!.
When the indy 'specialist' serviced my car, he told me my wishbone bushes were worn out, something that I thought would have been picked up on the MOT, and that was one of the items that I said had 'cured' itself.
I have a list here that the respected merc indy wrote, and for the last few months just about all of them have been wrong, some of my personal favourites are, in no particular order, the oil in the loom syndrome, which at a GTG, Sam Unit said my model did not suffer from that affliction, and the oil leak onto my plugs, which did not exist, and he fitted the wrong plugs!! oh the list is endless.

I think my message is, if a garage tells you your car is buggered, get a second opinion, if I had listened to Dick Turpin at the local Indy, he would have done a lot of work that did not exist, and let me drive a car with dangerous brake pipes!! priceless.

Oh and Col, the Beemer is going sweet as a nut!!
