SLK went for MOT today, failed on brake pipes, garage asked me in and put car on the ramps for me to see, badly rusted pipes, mot tester said they are dangerous, and boy they are rusty.

What really cheesed me off though, was the fact that a few months ago I paid a local independant Merc 'specialist' over the top money for a not very good service, wrong plugs, bad info etc, and at that time he wrote on my receipt that the underside of my car needed wax oiling, as my brake pipes were showing signs of corrosion, but cover them in waxoil and it would be ok.........so it would seem that in a few short months my brake pipes went from very slight corrosion to dangerously rusty!!

On the plus side all the other faults that the 'specialist Merc garage' said were wrong with my car have all put themselves right:)

I think Jim that a new indie is the order of the day

An MOT tester has a different set of criteria to a mechanic

The mechanic said the brake pipes were rusty and the MOT tester agrees. The MOT tester's main criterion is safety and he judges them to be unsafe

Very likely the MOT tester will not be looking at the other things the indie picked up. This doesn't mean they've "fixed" themselves

In my experience the #1 reason for MOT failures is rusty brake / fuel / self-levelling pipes

Or try a proper Mb dealer. Mine would have replaced the pipes.

Agreed, but I think the real discriminant here is "proper", which could be an Dealership or an Indy. It is a joy to know that your car is being correctly managed by a competent person, but it takes much more than the sign over the door to give me that warm comfortable feeling.

You need to change your indie for someone who provides better service.

I think I have found a good indy now....he does not advertise as being an MB specialist, but he knows his stuff, runs a very tidy workshop, and has a very good reputation.

Or try a proper Mb dealer. Mine would have replaced the pipes.

Sorry to drop a dig at your beloved MB dealer Hawk, but we have a 210 at the mo, which has full service history from the said dealer, last one done a few weeks ago, cost of £450,

Now why do we have a car with the said history, which needs the brake pipes running front to back, rusted to hell!! and the self leveling pipes burst due to rusted through!!!

Again i ask, for £450 pound, dont you think your dealer might have just notice that, and offered to replace the pipes!!! No, instead it lets him down and pours oil all over his drive!!

Again, you forget what my last job was, do you want a list of every time i was called out to a job and was told "this was only serviced yesterday"!!

You love that dealer, i dont have a problem with that!!

But Dave and myself started out so people didnt get ripped off and they didnt have the problems after using main dealers!!

You go on about dealer servicing so much, belive me, its not all its cracked up to be!! 50% of my jobs, used to be down to the dealers getting it wrong!!! and i having to go out and correct it!!!

Im not just having a go at "your" dealer, as i covered 5 in the area, but there was always one which got more complants than the others!!!

Would you like to guess which one Sir!!!

Where I am, there is a limited choice, main stealer, or someone who masquerades as a Merc "specialist".

The garage I am using now is what I would call a general car repair garage, but like I said already, they have a good rep, use genuine parts, and seem reasonably priced........oh and Col, the Beemer is going sweet as a nut, and the Beemer forums are very dull places.......:)

Something we dont know about Malc????

Well I get so angry at all of the how good his dealer is on every post, when they could not fix his.

Let Hawk tell us, or I will

Hawks excellent info that he post on the new car front and updates is all spoilt by these post.

Incompetence, sharp practice and criminal behaviour are their forte.
My car's been to them for three services and the only evidence that they'd done anything was done incorrectly. I'd like to have claimed a refund for all the incompetent servicing but would have to have proven my loss. Difficult to do after the event so made do with the last service. Never again. (The detail's elsewhere on the forum)

Oh, and while I'm on it, 'goodwill', don't make me laugh. My car was 3 months out of warranty, still within service (all done at the same main dealer) when a fault developed with the turbo. They said they'd write to MBUK for a goodwill contribution. They didn't even have the decency to write back.

I think about the poor guy who bought a new SL500 and he had to unlock it with the key after 2 days. he was told that was normal for a SL and he must drive it every day.

I took him back in and had a chat with the service guy and they agreed to fix it

A £75 grand car and you have to re set the windows etc after 2 days, and only 1 year iold
