Hi guys,

I currently have a C200 Kompressor W202 Sport Tip Auto Estate on a 2001 Y plate. Probably one of the very last unless anyone can tell me otherwise. This is a great car. Previous to this I had as a company car a new (in 2002) SAAB AERO auto estate. Nice car, good seats and stupidly quick in a straight line, but not for a minute do I regret buying the C200K in it's place, it is better to drive and way way more reliable.

The C200K has now more than 100k on the clock and drives better and is so much more reliable than the SAAB; which since I am paying for it myself means it was a good choice. Not as quick as the SAAB obviously but speed is not everything once you are paying the bills yourself!!

My question is not about the C200K, rather, my wife has a Citroen C4 on a 54 plate - a top of the range 2.0 auto Exclusive with 11,000 miles on it. I want to keep the C200K for my wife (It owes me nothing) and buy a Mercedes for myself. The Citroen is worth £11,000 or so.

I want to part exchange the Citroen and ideally pay £2-3k on top to get a new car for me for work.

I do 20-25,000 miles a year or so and get paid £450 per month car allowance and 10p per mile (under negotiations to 15p) for fuel.

What should I buy in a Mercedes for maximum reliability, maximum comfort and running costs I can afford. Speed is fun but so far, from everything I can see a new shape E220 CDi auto would make sense.

I do though see that a lower purchase price for a petrol would take a lot of making up in fuel costs for the higher price of a diesel. Plus diesel is more expensive. And I prefer petrol motors although I am not totally against a diesel for the mileage I do.

I would consider C, E and S Class and would probably but not definitely prefer an estate over a saloon.

Must have is leather and air con and auto and nothing else.

Oh, one more thing, depreciation is not really an issue, assuming my buy is reliable, and I can afford to run it, I would keep it for 5 years.

Thanks, I look forward to your help.

oooh complicated. The 'brain' choice is a c220 cdi. This will be the cheapest to run, drives similarly to your current c, quite reliable and given the number on the road, fairly easy to source at reasonable cost.
The heart choice would be an E320cdi but it 'aint cheap to run!'.
The 320 is great, but, at least for me, the insurance was another £100 per year over my E240 and the economy, whilst excellent for the performance, isn't that great. Mid 30's really so no better than your c200k. When compared to the 50mpg you'd get out of a c220cdi and even with the cost difference you are looking at a 35%+ saving at the pumps, plus you don't need to fill up as often.
As I just posted on another thread, I compromised on an E270cdi and am very happy. Economy is maybe 3mpg down on the 220 (and 4 up on the 320!) but the performance is adequate compensation. I assume you live on the motorway. If so, the torque of the diesel makes motorway driving far nicer as you don't have to kick down as much. I've found maintenance on the E to be a bit pricey. Only had one service but the dealer was over £600 and I ended up paying over £300 from an indie.
If I'm honest, my E is a pure luxury - I'd be quite happy (and financially better off) with a c220 so it all depends on what your heart/brain mix is!

Your running costs for another Mercedes will be more than the Citroen. Once you are past that you are ok.
The fuel cost per mile for my E320cdi is 10p which would fit with your company allowance, the £450 car allowance (Less tax) should easily pay for servicing/repairs/insurance/tyres and road tax (assumming you are not paying for a loan on the car). In 3.5yrs I have spent £8,330.52 on servicing/repairs, insurance, tyres, road tax and £9,353.64 on fuel for 91,150 miles which excluding depreciation = 0.193ppm.
As I have not run a 270 or 220 I cannot comment on if they would have been cheaper to service/repair. Fuel cost would be cheaper, however I love the straight 6 engine and the way it pulls. I am very happy with the power/economy compromise and I am getting 36.5mpg average.
Try a few and let your heart decide.
