When an old banger is p/ex'd in, what do the dealers do with these cars, and if sent to breakers then how much are they charged to do so?

Also is this answer to above same for commercial too.

Usually trades go to auction or the dealer will pass it to dealer specialising in cheap bangers.

Everything just goes down the line. Places like Mercland make their living selling cars that are otherwise excellent but just a little too old for a main dealer forecourt.

As Lostkiwi.

There are used car outlets that specialise in main dealer trade-ins. They often have a 'closed shop' arrangement with specific dealers, who pass to them everything that does not fit their business model. These traders either retail the vehicles or send to their usual auction house.

Even bangers have resale value. Traders have a network to sell on p/x's

Empty garage, awaiting new toy :)
The price of steel is up at the moment so some dismantlers are simply actioning off the whole car
then the unsold ones go straight to scrap and no dismantling is available.

There is a dealer network for PX's stock clearance etc
You have to be a car dealer/trader with VAT registration to be eligible on that circuit.

I very recently traded my 2010 W212. It was most definitely not a banger but it was high mileage. It went straight to auction.

An end of life Meriva we had got recycled. Got £160 for it. Within hours of it leaving us engine, wheels and tyres, battery, converter were all removed and shell shredded. Within a few days was on its way to China to be made into something different. Recyclers recently had a Mclaren in but nothing could be recycled- they struggled to get £13k for it.

When I traded my first Z4 at a main dealers for a newer model I handed over all original handbook and receipts, saw it on the the Z4 owners forum a few months later, the guy had paid £1000 more than I got in PX at a small garage and got none of the handbook or receipts so I sent him a few I had found.

When our 212 was collected, the chap who turned up was driving it straight to a vehicle auction house to be sold off that week. That was a car supplied direct from MB Fleet Services to us. They saw that car for one day in total for its entire life!

My previous 212 and the A6 went the same way, even collected by the Auction houses.
Strangely my 63 was originally from Manchester, serviced at Liverpool until 2 years old, the previous owner traded it for a C63, it went to auction by a Birmingham company who sold it pre auction to Safwat in Southend from where I bought it...in turn they took my SL in a generous trade in, not sure where that is now though!

Out of curiosity, I bought my w212 E class last January, it had 124'000 Miles, with 2 previous owners, Gold Metallic paint, elegance model. 2.1 Blue efficiency engine, elegance model. What would a similar car cost in England?

Interesting, my last 2013 E220 CDi had 130,000 miles on it when the lease was up, and wonder what Mercedes finance would do if I did give it back, as I'd imagine the mileage would be too high to sell on a dealer forecourt?

Nevertheless a friend of a friend bought the car outright from Mercedes finance from me. Already got a buyer lined up for my current one, so I'll never know!

Mercland took my old focus as px and it was sold less than 7 days after they put it up for sale. I'm not surprised though as it was an excellent car, in good nick with loads spent down the years.

They gave me 1700 px for it, hadnt been offered more than a grand anywhere else.
