Hello and welcome to the forum.
The W and S switch is for the gearbox, in S the car will start in 1st gear, in W the car starts off in 2nd, in W the car will not roll back on a hill.
In S the car changes gear up at higher speeds
In W this gives, you a different gear ratio to S

Pretty sure I answered same question on Yahoo answers this morning. How many opinions does someone need ?

Winter/standard. Use W when conditions are tricky, ie ice. The gear ratios in reverse are also changed.

It took less time to answer than your post.

You will only get the effect when you start off, I am sure on the 211 it tells you in the instrument cluster if W or S is selected

On the 211 you have C or S mode and if you have the sport pack you get M mode as well. W and S is on the 210.

Glad you cleared that up CoolHans.

I couldn't understand why a 2005 reg had W/S when my 2004 W211 has C/S. It must, therefore, be one of the last 210's or with the word "shifter" for gearstick perhaps Benz Fanatic is from the American market where nomenclature might be different?

Welcome to to forum Benz Fanatic - put me out of my misery - what model is is it and where are you?

In counties with harsh winter conditions the cars come with W/S (winter/summer) options... Under normal climate conditions C/S (comfort/sport) are the usual options...

Interesting, I always thought it was a model / year change, not a regional thing...

The joke is the box is the same and only the wording C = W and a second gear start, both the same thing

As I understand, and as it appears to be, on my C class in W the car starts off in second to give better traction and changes up a slightly lower speeds and is less likely to change down overall giving a more subdued gear shift which is good for winter driving and also pretty good for normal use if you are a steady driver (the torque on the 230 kompressor engine makes good use of W mode) In W the car is more likely to roll back on a hill and requires more throttle to get moving if on a slight incline or on gravel (this was the first thing I used to check if ours wouldn't pull off our old drive without throttle) in W reverse is also a higher ratio.

Not quite so in W or C the car cannot roll back as a sprag clutch is used, the other standard mode on the box is S and the car can roll back in this mode on a hill
