    .... too many cars!
There is another thread on the forum which asks 'what your car has that you didn't know about'. Its a good question but a stupid one at the same time and by this I mean that we 'men' who know everything, dont need to read the Owners manual, do we. As a result of us knowing everything we have stuff on our cars that we didn't know we had ...... hence the thread.

So this got me thinking and I have to be honest, it can be dangerous at my age but I persevered and came up with this thread .... What extras do you really need?

When I finally cut the ties to my Mothers apron and went to travel the highway and byways of Ireland as a young Sales Rep selling engineering tools I used to travel 70,000 miles a year. In those days, a passengers door mirror was an extra as was a radio! Now we have a seemingly endless selection of goodies to fit to out cars, but what do you actually need? I remember having this discussion at a sales meeting one year and I came up with stuff that we have taken for granted for years!
Back then when I started in this noble profession I had a VW Jetta LD 1.6 diesel 4 speed - no radio and no door mirror!! It had headrests though! As time passed cars got more equipment but most of it you didn't need and the stuff you wanted was extra - simple marketing I suppose! So what was on my list? Well the list has changed slightly but here it is with a few new additions but you must remember that now, as a consultant, I still travel 70,000 miles a year ....

The car must be a diesel ..... with the following
    Electric front windows
    Power Steering
    Cruise control
    Central locking
Good sound system with a good Bluetooth phone connection
    ABS
    Comfortable manually adjusted cloth seats
Good headlights with a proper cleaning system
Decent washer bottle capacity with heated washer jets
    Aircon
    Drivers arm rest
    12v power point x 2

Thats it. Its not much is it? My E220 has almost all of that and my new Passat has almost all of that and a pile more stuff that I dont use or need.

So think about it. Think about how you use your car and with that in mind, think about what do you really need. Not what's nice or nice to have but what you need to have.

    I will be watching ..... ;)

    Dear Car makers,

Please could you, in order of priority, include

AN ELECTRIC SUNROOF (Not all too common today)
A stereo with MP3 input (USB or simple headphone cable, don't care which), if aftermarket similarly don't care
    Electric front windows
    PAS
Central Locking (i can't claim i need remote central locking as the batteries drained in the key fob in mine 3 months ago and haven't bothered spending a fiver on some new ones yet, and my world hasn't ended, even with teh only keyhole being on the passenger side!!)
    Sat nav (aftermarket is fine)

Please do away with all the other stuff in order to save weight and likely repair costs and put the R&D budget into actual key attributes of a car like comfort, quality feel, refinement and making it reliable and out of decent materials...

In fact on second thoughts don't bother because even if you wanted to listen to me (which i'm sure you don't) once my requirements have gone through all the layers of management, boffins and marketeers they would have been totally distorted anyway, and despite 15 years of progress my £1,500 W124 would still probably suit me better anyway!

In a former life I used to be doing 40k miles/year to facilitate doing the job but 70k miles is an awesome amount of time behind the wheel of a motor car.

In answer to your question, providing door mirrors are standard on all cars these days, there is no NEED for any extras.

DESIRABLE extras for me to make motoring safer are all the electronic wizardry that we have come to rely upon as standard such as ABS and traction control, power steering, air conditioning heated rear screen and good tyres.
OVER AND ABOVE I very much like Satellite navigation and hands free mobile connectivity, fixed camera data base information plus radar detection with scrambler. I like parking sensors and my all singing and dancing cooling/heating massaging seats.
I absolutely love being able to transform my SL from roadster to coupe in 16 seconds.

I would really like an attractive female brunette passenger, 25-38 years, with curves (rough guide: 38/25/38) and an engaging personality.

The only item I've had on a car which I would like on all others is a heated windscreen.

    No just tea ;)

I did consider adding auto self closing windows for when the car is locked.
But my actual answer is more feasible on an MB
