Glorious sunshine this morning, so pulled the car out and gave it a wash. It takes me a full hour to wash and dry this car and reminds me that I should try to get fitter. The car looks great though, if the roads were dry, I'd drive it today.

Can you see the chain through the engine oil cap? Fairly sure I can on my 272, I’ll go and take a look in a minute
Thought I could

image.jpeg image.jpeg image.jpeg I have 2 words to removing the cover on the M271 engine to check the chain and sprockets , Fiddly,Fiddly,Fiddly ! Specifically the fact that the wiring loom runs over the engine and does its best to stop you manoevering the camshaft cover out .
Eventually did it , but it took 4 hours . If i did it again i could probably halve that . The chain and sprockets looked in very good condition . There was almost no blackening of the chain by the oil and the sprockets seemed to have very little wear on the teeth .
I turned the engine using the crankshaft to 0/T , and checked the marks on the back of the sprockets and they were very close , within a mm or so . Trying to pull the chain up with my fingers created no movement at all , so everything is still very tight .
The car has 69,000 miles on it at the moment , with no start up noises .
The pictures i took didnt turn out as well as i hoped , the sun was quite bright .
This was quite an advanced job for me , really pushed my knowledge and nerve .
Next job will be check for leaks from the new gasket , fingers crossed .
Obviously i am far from any form of expert , but looking at the condition of the chain and sprockets my mind can rest easy for a while . I will just stick to my 5k oil changes

Pretty scruffy. I'll get some ordered but cleaned them up for now. Also stuck an air freshener in the unit to make things smell nice

Not to the Merc but fitted a DashCam to Mrs L's Mini today. It’s been on my list for a while but I only recently worked out that the 4m cable would be enough to run it through to the spare 12v socket in the boot so no need to tap into fuse boxes. As usual, the initial “that looks simple enough” turned out to be a tad optimistic and plans A and B were abandoned. Plan C worked although, by then, it was more a case of making it up as I went along! In the end, I ran it across the top of screen under the headlining, across the top of the A pillar behind the trim, across the top of the door under the rubber right down the B pillar to the bottom and then under the trim, along side the rear seat and into the boot. That was a longer run than I had planned but I still had about 20cm of cable spare so it just worked.

Mrs L is pleased that she now has a camera with the cable hidden all the way and I switched the 32Gb MicroSD card from my camera to hers and put the new 128GB card into mine (well, we do much longe journeys in mine!).

Well done - I wouldn’t have gone beyond looking under the oil filler cap! (well, someone's got to keep our Indies in business!)

Thanks , If I had had the option of stopping and bolting the cover back down again I would have , but once the cover was loosened I needed to get it off to fit a new gasket on so I was screwed :D.
Anyway less worrying if I have to do it again .

I normally use Asda for petrol driven to it by the price, 4p per litre cheaper than surrounding petrol stations. We had a mile round trip to do to-day but I filled up at a convenient Shell station that was on route. When e got home I looked at the fuel consumption and it read 40.9mpg which is about 3 to 4mpg more than I normally get on Supermarket fuel. Is this just my imagination or is this feasible ?

Hey! round is a shape!!! (I speak from experience, lol).

It usually takes me between 3-4 hours to wash, First the alloys inner and outer are done then, under the bonnet plus all door, bonnet and boot checks, I then wash the car starting at the top and working my way down (with fresh water of course) rinse, dry same and do all windows (both sides), remove any tar spots that washing may have missed or not have done properly. Reapply polish to the bits that I had to use tar remover on, vacuum the interior and boot, micro fibre cloth wipe on all interior surfaces chamois clean the steering wheel and gear knob and finally check lights and levels.

I can do a fast wash at work with the hot pressure washer, usually takes around 30 minutes but, I start getting the OCD itch when I do this quickie wash.

I'm guessing you're more diligent than I am, or maybe your car gets dirtier between washes. I could while away much longer applying unctions, polishing glass, polishing paintwork until it looks like glass...

This was just a wash.

We'll done Wighty. Just think how much confidence you've gained and how much you learned!

Washed the r230 then took it for a drive up to the other side of Lincoln and back to get it dirty again :)

Just checked my gasket work from yesterday after 3 short drives , all looks good so far . I haven't checked the spark plug recesses yet , because I would have to loosen bolts that hold the gaskets to check they are not leaking .

Added a bit of "Bling"...... Sorry, couldn't resist. Any addition of Chrome has gotta be good, and for less than a tenner you can't complain really!
I know they're not the "proper" ones but it's gotta be better than two gundgy pipes hanging down!

Looks well , I use them to.
Have to admit I am a bit of a chromeaholic
