Drove to Bournemouth and averaged 36mpg and I didn't drive at 56 mph either. The harshness going from 3rd to 2nd or 2nd to 1st, unsure which it was/is has improved and I've since read that I may need up to 500 miles for the gearbox to adapt OR I can look to do the gearbox adaptations with the box cold 5 times and warm 5 times to shortcut the process. I will do the gearbox reset (foot fully don on accelerator for 10 secs etc) which I neglected after putting it back together... Which should help.

Do I do the gearbox adaptation on the scanner, or not, that is the question... Or as Harry asked, 'do I feel lucky, punk?'

[C216] - New fuel filter, unpleasant job, never did like fitting things inside a fuel tank. Checked date on filter I removed, was made in 2007 so was probably the original factory filter, it didn’t do too bad for 19 years I suppose.

Curiosity got the better of me and I cut open the old filter, it most definitely needed replacing, if you touched the paper element, then loads of black came off it.

Small but satisfying win: fixed the driver's side air vent slider. The side-to-side vanes behind the up-down vanes were not meshing with the slider on the front and so didn't move.

So of course I consulted YT and found out how to dismantle the thing. Did that - had to take the vane system apart. It consists of the four vanes - each one different, one of which has a moulded rack that's supposed to mesh with the slider; I'll call it the actuating vane. Tying the vanes together is a small piece of stiff wire with loops that wrap around lugs in each vane to ensure they move together.

Once apart, it looks like a hellish little puzzle: ensuring the vanes go back in the right order while staying attached to the wire. Tiny spindles at either end of each vane - once you get them in the right order, ha ha - slot into equally tiny slots in the casing. On re-assembly - a short phrase that encompasses about 45 minutes of cursing the man (I'm sure was a man) who invented this thing - it became clear that the actuating vane had separated from the wire so it wasn't under the tension required to properly mesh with the slider.

Final assembly, despite the fact that the last screw under a piece of trim holding down the speaker cover (which had to be removed) was a mere handful of centimetres from the front of the windscreen, was pretty easy by comparison and took ten minutes.

It all works now.

Cheers boys, she’s a good one, have just started to notice a few specs of rust appearing, time to start spending some money on her, can’t complain, she’s just about to turn 37!!

On Thursday evening I finally got round to replacing the drivers side mirror indicator. In the end I bought a new LED indicator, removed the cover and whilst it was off, I attached the new one which didn't work. So I stopped as it was getting dark and starting to rain. Very frustrating as it took me about 20 mins to just push back the metal clip to allow me to slide the cover off.

Next day and a quick look on YT recommended I replace the wiring as it often breaks. So last night I checked the wiring with the voltmeter and definitely no power at the little connector to the indicator so I snipped out the middle of each of the two wires and replaced with new wiring using the plastic solder joiners which you place over both ends then use a hair dryer or paint stripper gun to heat up as the solder inside then joins the wires together and the outside shrink seals it at the same time. Once I did this I had a working indicator. Then it started to rain again so I stopped.

This morning, Saturday, up early to finish off and I decided to redo one of the wires as it was a bit short for my liking and apply a shrink sleeve to the outside for additional protection before putting together BUT I then spent 30 mins trying to slide the cover back on. I've got it partially on and the indicator working then it started raining again, so I've stopped. It works, but I will finish off properly getting back on as there is clearly a knack to this and I don't currently have it.

Cleaned throttle body and MAF, replaced all seals for elbow and MAF to air filter.
Lubricated sunroof with gleitpaste and applied lubricant to the window seals.
Checked brake pad thickness and tire condition

Always admired that car in the day a friend had exactly the same in blue/black would have loved one but a bit outside my wallet at the time. Great job and well worth preserving.

What did you need to do?

been chasing vacuum leaks since i got it 4 years ago, managed to find a new old stock drivers door actuator which fixed the central locking, then managed to clean the moss alarm wireing contacts so now it all works via remote . only took 4 years but that was due to lack of parts.

Small jobs - satisfying jobs.

I fixed the yellow boot latch thingy today - previously the actuating pin of the front half of the mech had broken off so I had temporarily held it in place with a rubber band. Bought a replacement from a company in Germany. That fixed it.

Also removed the driver's sun visor and found a small metal pin inside whose rattling has been annoying me since forever. I couldn't see where it might have come from but everything still works - but now it doesn't rattle any more. Result!
