Yesterday during the fine weather I removed the windscreen from the Rolls to sort out the water leak from both lower corners. These rust out under the screen and let the water in. So I was expecting to see holes......

Oh, so it looks like it was leaking in because there is no sealant applied when the screen was last refitted

Do they even use sealant? If it the old rubber mounted ones you use a piece of cord to pull in the rubber....like most cars of the 70s and 80s, no sealant is usually used....the tight fitting rubber IS the seal. Used to fit loads back in the day on early VW and Audi cars. Push them out with your feet....cord around the rubber which you used to pull the inside half of the seal into the car while someone on the outside bashed around the edge of the screen with the side of their fist to seat it properly. Happy days!

BMW passed it’s MOT today with one advisory offside inner track rod slight play - which is much better than the 7 advisories the car had last year for four cracked tyres, rusty front discs and inner track rod slight play

I’ll do the inner track rod next year before the MOT.

While I was waiting the reception they were giving a quote on the phone to a customer who needed a new clutch and flywheel @ £2450…gulp…autos are the way to go.

You're right, no sealant when new.
Sealant when old I would get away with a new screen rubber, but the sealant is a lot cheaper.
I remember do windscreens on Audi/VW on early to late 70s cars, and Triumphs. Some BMW and Mercedes had just the rubber without sealant.

Yeah if the rubber has gone hard then sealant will help. But just make sure its the right stuff...you might want to get it back out one day....so no Sikaflex etc!!

Just did a quick oil sump drain on the 520i . I had some left over oil in the garage that needed using , mainly 5/30 with a bit of 5/40 .
Didn’t bother with the filter change , I’ve got a BMW service in November as part of the years warranty .

I stick with the 0W-30 a bit pricier but it’s what the car has always had. My daughter’s 1 series was being serviced annually and as they now do low mileage I suggested changing to a bi-annual oil interval which she wasn’t aware of and nobody had mentioned.

My local Independent only uses LL 5W-30 they told me.

While the car was being serviced by the BMW franchise they used LL04 0W-30 but outside the franchise 5W-30 seems to be the preferred option as it’s more accessible and certainly cheaper. One or two franchises sell 0W-30 on eBay so I tend to buy from them or from Germany whichever is cheaper but it only comes in 1 litre bottles

I have used Dick Lovett Bristol on E-Bay a few times, they usually do good prices but I am not paying £28 a liter for oil, it's ridiculous.

£55 for 5L of Castrol Edge LL-04 works and used a MANN filter from GSF. The car is on 2 year changes but I do it every 12 months.

Castrol also do that oil in a 0W-30 as well

Well on the subject of oil changes , I’ve ended up booking a slightly early major service for the BM , it was due at the start of November but I may end up being busier around that time so it’s booked for next week at a local Sytner group dealer .
I’ve got a year warranty on the car so need all the service boxes ticked .
They discount 30% on older cars , so £500 for a major service with pollen/cabin filters , air filter , spark plugs , oil/filter .
Good thing I didn’t replace the spark plugs when I got the car in January.
That will mean the car won’t need another service for 2 years/20k .
The car is full Main dealer history with 33k on it , so worth keeping the history I think (I know it won’t matter a jot at trade in )

Despite all this they refused to lower the service to our agreed price so I cancelled it . As far as they are concerned, they lost the service slot and I won’t be going back there again .
I’ll either use a specialist in Chelmsford (there are 2 ) or do the work myself , I haven’t decided yet . It’s due around November time .
Irritated to say the least but from my point of view agreements matter .

They are all at it MB have just quoted me £70pm for a service care plan that’s £844pa for a 4 year plan so £3360 in total just for a GLC43. We are all victim of the Chinese dumping cheap cars in the EU if BMW and MB can’t make money selling enough cars they will find other ways to make the up the loss in revenue.

Just booked a week in a gite in the Dordogne next week , all very last minute as the weather looks good . Going to take the 5 series as the E class has just done a France and a Spain trip in July and August.
Should give the 5 series a good work out prior to service time when I get back . Sustained 80mph on French Motorways should do the old girl a good workout .
