2005 E320 CDI (W211/OM648)
I, a new member of this group and a relatively new owner of a 2005 E320 CDI, have been searching in vain for the definition of “CDI3” and the difference between “CDI3” and “CDI-anything-else.” “CDI” itself I understand, the definitions are common. References to CDI3 (and occasionally, CDI2) seem to appear in European or UK-based publications; perhaps that’s why I cannot find it here in the colonies. Can anyone help me?

From memory it's the generation of engine management ECU.
I seem to recall my 350cdi is CDi4 and previous generation was CDi3.

Yep, common rail system generation. Main difference between 2 and 3 are that 3rd gen has higher max pressure, primer pump in a tank (yes some 2nd gen had them in the end of production), fuel quantity control valve.

Thank you all for your replies! So, my USA-version 2005 E320 CDI (W211.026/OM648.961) is which generation?

Yep. Most 320 if not all are CDI 3 whereas the 350s are CDI 4. Both use the same basic 3.0l V6 but the CDI 4 produces more power.

Yep, Xentry shows what version it is when connecting car :) No drastic differences after 3rd gen IMO, some more pressure rise, injector coding and calibration stuff etc.
