    Hi All,

I have a W203 2.7 CDI C class, 2001. My problem is, the cabin doesn't get too warm.

Yesterday I drove from Blackpool to Newcastle, approx 150 miles. All the way the engine temperature didn't go above 45. Is this normal? In traffic, it only gets to about 60 degrees.

Anyway, yesterday was freezing, I had to stop and put my coat on to drive home in! Has anyone had this before, where the car won't warm up. Am I right in thinking the engine temp is directly related to the warmth of the heater?

Thanks in advance for any help.

You need a new thermostat...temp should be close to 90.

Thanks all. Next question - is the car being damaged in any way being run with the thermostat stuck open?

I have had 2 C270 Cdi's and had to replace the thermostat in both..
The temp should show just over 90 !!
Your cool running will affect the fuel consumption and its not really ideal for engines to run sub optimal temperatures..
Its all designed for 92 and really you need to correct it.

Also with winter around the corner you will benefit from MUCH better heating.

    You want one of these:

It might lead to damage because a thermostat stuck in an open position does not allow your car to heat properly as what your car has just manifested.

Mine ran for a couple of years like that, it should be 83ºC and after fitting a new thermostat yours should be fine. They cost about 40 quid, and are a bit fiddly to fit due to ancillary tubing in the way, but take a mechanic 15 minutes.

Cheers Richard. I rang a Merc independent who quoted me £125, parts, labour & VAT.

I have also rang my local garage to ask for a quote.

Cheers to everyone who has replied. :)

just to add, if engine oil does not reach its optimum (normally around 80 degrees) it is not lubricating the engine sufficiently. No immediate damage will be noticed, but long term life could very well be effected.

It's a bit hard to tell on the dial - I'd have approximated mine to a touch under 85 so 83 sounds spot on.

It's always been rock solid on the figure, although it can take a heck of time to get there in coldish weather. I happened to notice when I'd done 12 miles of flowing 50MPH A road yesterday and it still wasn't fully up to temp.

The 270 Cdi engines have a 92C thermostat..
    I am 100% sure about that !

Well just thought I would let you know I had a new thermostat fitted today. Jeez, it's like driving around in a sauna! Many thanks to all those who offered advice.
