Am I singled out to experience pain with my recent acquisition of E220 5 door estate,or are there others like me? E.g since my communication with the" forum members", I crashed the car and having only got it back today, I find that whilst standing in traffic the temperature suddenly shoots up from app 83-- !02, at which point I switched off the engine . Is this normal or just my bad luck?

Can anyone shed some light on what should be acceptable range of temperature .

Hi, the temp should usually sit on 80. May reach up to 90ish in hot weather and in traffic.

Most probably related to your crash - was it frontal damage? If so could be the viscous or electrmagnetic coupling etc..... Get it checked out..

Hi there,
Not sure how different your 220 is from my 230, the "normal" temp my car registers on the gauge is 80C, but it has shown 90C in heavy traffic once. Sounds similar to Jay's experience.
My Thermostat is marked as 87 degrees C.
Which would indicate that it starts to open at 87C and is fully open at 102C.
Over the years I've run a lot of different cars, and as soon as I get worried by either slow-warm-up in the winter, or raised temperature in the summer, I change the Stat immediately. I just don't think they are as reliable as we think they are.
I recently gave my TE a new waterpump, so changed the Stat at the same time.
It's easy to do and not expensive (remember to buy a new seal at the same time).

I have an identical problem - switching the heater on hot and blower on full is one way to get rid of some heat when you're in traffic.
See my post about fitting a Kenlowe fan. Assuming your car has a 111 series engine ( 16 valve) the coupling is £91 + VAT from Euro car parts.
There are advantages from fitting an electric fan - especially in traffic when the engine is at idle & the standard fan is not turning that fast !

if you have an electromagnetic clutch controlled fan, then it is usually the cooling fan switch which is faulty-it is located on the right front of the cylinder head-remove the connector and short the connecting wires-you should hear a click with the ignition on but engine off-this means your fanclutch is working correctly-therefore fan switch faulty.-if however there is no click-then clutch fan faulty

if however you have a viscous operated fanclutch, then warm the car up and let idle ,as the temp gauge needle climbs to the point where this type of fan cuts in -you will hear a loud roar like an aeroplane which becomes louder if you rev the engine.

if the fan does not cut in, then it is likely you have a faulty fan itself

therefore first ascertain which type of fan clutch you have.

i would also check the fuse for the electromagnetic clutch fan in the fuse box before any checks as this is the easiest one to check.

good luck.

 Lowering the fan cut-in temperature

This works at least for the 102 engine with the two-pin sensor and electromagnetic clutch. Just solder a 110 Ohm parallel to the pins and the fan will work at around 90°C instead of 102. It's worth doing when driving in dense traffic like here in Paris .
