Thanks for all the replies. This is more interesting and involved than I thought it would be!
Just to confirm then:
The filler cap says 35psi front, and 36+3=39 rear for normal driving
and
The Blue label says 32/33 front/back.
So from what everyone is saying 32-ish is fine for a nice smooth ride but I can go up to 35/39 if I want to see the chiropractor weekly but be able to turn corners like Fangio?

I would go with the blue label.

The label says 91 and the tyre says 91 for the load rating and that is correct.

I would use the lower setting in on the label or the ride can be far too hard

Not a terrible thing at all...just confusing, thanks for the correction.

Well, that is interesting, Ben. I have had tyre retailers refuse to fit tyres with lesser speed ratings than original - say it is illegal. Don't doubt what you have posted - makes more sense anyway (unusual for a Gov't body to come up with something that is sensible!!) Learn something every day.
I was just taken with the statement on the placard which read "do not fit tyres with a speed or load rating less than specified" or something to that effect. The speed rating was V. Stupid anyway with our 110 top speed limit.

The thing that stuns me is the fact that a govt department can actually legislate something that is common sense...

But like you, I have had a tyre shop refuse to replace my tyres with "same again please" on my v6 Calibra (blueprinted engine, showroom nick) and saying the tyres had to be those on the placard.

Tyre outlets in the UK can and will refuse to knowingly provide a wrong rated tyre for a car in the same way that they will not do an unsafe repair nor repair a tyre that is in itself tread worn illegal.

I too have been told that they will not fit certain tyres to a car of mine.I seem to recall it was only the speed rating they were bothered with and would have no qualms in putting any odd tyre on, so long as the speed rating was correct!. Seems like a lot of tosh to me. what would i know though.

Slightly off topic....but what gets me is the 'eco' pressures posted on some MB BlueEfficiency models. EG 29/29 on the A Class suddenly becomes 32/38. Otherwise known as a no-cost way of being able to advertise 2mpg more on consumption figures, at the expense of the ride.

pressure

label pressures are usually somewhere near then check actual tyres for wear, less tread in middle let em down a bit , less tread both sides pump em up ,keep an eye on low profiles especially

38 in an A class must be horrible

It is. With its short wheelbase the A needs all the help it can get ride-wise. As it is, with the right tyres (Continental IMO), further suspension adjustments made, I am convinced, in the 2008 facelift and 29 all round, the ride is quite acceptable for a small car.

DRIVERS DOOR SETTING other petrol cap setting far too high for standard car. Only circumstance might be if it was carrying a lot of extra weight ------specified with heavy duty suspension and the large metal sump guard for example

True, nothing has changed that much, My V70R has a recommended pressure of 28, my 140 is 30 all for the same weights and speeds

I never ran my 230 with the rear tyres at MB figures , they always seemed to me much too high, so I ran it at 32 all round, it was not nice with the rear at 34 or more
