Hi all,
In my continuing efforts to buy a used Mercedes 260E ("D" reg, 1987) I have carried out a full check over of the car. You can read all about my queries with this car in the "General" section of the forum.

Today when I checked it over, I found a small underbonnet "unit" which has two wires running to it (one brown, one black) which have been cut. This unit is in the heater circuit it seems, and is located on the left hand side of the engine bay (as you look at the front of the car). It's just forward of the master cylinder. It has a rubber surround that holds it to the body.

It has one large pipe running into it which emerges from somewhere around the engine. A pipe then comes out of it and this then connects to another "unit" which is marked "Bosch, made in France" and is just in front of the master cylinder. This 2nd unit then has two pipes emerging from it and seems to consist of two "bells shaped"cylinders. The pipes seem to go off to the heater.

The heater seems to work OK. But what the heck is the "unit" with the cut wires? Why were they cut? I think it's probably some sort of electronic switch, and MAY be involved in the heater circuit. Obviously, I'm about to buy this car as it's otherwise fairly reasonable but I'm a little worried that this may have been bodged to make the car run cooler. HELP!

Thanks very much Andy. It certainly looks like a small motor to me. It doesn't leak but I would guess that it may be faulty and causing fuses to blow and that's why it has been disconnected. I'll investigate the wiring and then order a new one if the wiring is OK.

Cheers, Al
