Thanks
The manual says to take the car in to change the number plate bulb, I have done it myself, the warning light on the dash is still on, do you think it needs resetting by the garage?

Shouldn't do. They normally reset every time. I assume if it's the number plate light then it's off until you put on the side lights?
There are various causes but its a search and find job. Try to isolate the circuit, brakes, side lights, head lights, main beam etc. Then check each bulb in turn.
1) Is it the correct wattage?
2) Are the contacts clean, shiny and connecting properly.

I had the warning light on with the brakes on the 210. Everything looked fine but after removing the bulb checking it for the 10th time, I noticed that one side was slightly brighter than the other. Took both out, cleaned and sprung the contacts and reassembled - 2 bright brake lights and no warnings.

I had this problem with my car when I first had it, It turned out to be the wrong lamp in the reversing light. - being an automatic it goes through 'Reverse' to get to 'Drive'

I would guess (as a humble marine electrical engineer) that a current monitor is assigned to each set of lamps so that if a lamp is blown, or of the incorrect type it would set off the warning lamp. Try testing the lamps sets individually - Brakes, Side, Head, Reversing, Fog, Hazzard. If it only does it on the move then it is probably a dodgy contact.

The indicator repeaters on the wings aren't covered. I found this out at the MOT when I had been drivinging around in a death trap because this wasn't working.

The module that senses the faulty bulbs works on the current being drawn. If you fit different wattage bulbs, current will still be sensed.

I'm not sure if the number plate lights are covered, easy way to check though.

How do I check?
