Hi guys,
Looking for a little advice on what v8 Ml to buy and what to look for.
I have had my ML270 for just shy of 7 years and I have decided that as I don't drive it as much now I'd like something more fun but yet still able to tow 3000kg. I have seen the 63, 500 and 55, but which one would be the most reliable?
I would imagine they'll not going to be as reliable as the diesels but I really like the idea of having a V8 without going down the lawn rover route

Any help will be much appreciated

Many thanks, Len

The sensible option is the diesel as above.
But if you let your heart rule your head you will be looking at ML63's if fuel consumption doesn't bother you. You'll have a grin from ear to ear with the performance and sound.

The petrol V8s are big, lazy engines which are bang on reliable.... it’s not like common rail diesels are paragons of toughness!!!!!

I would stick with diesels but the proposed diesel bans are making me think go petrol, i don't cover much more then a couple of thousand miles a year so fuel consumption isn't an issue I just need the towing capacity as I tow cars every now and again

What common issues and things I should look for if buying a 63?

Joking. There was a batch of engines affected by bad cylinder head bolts. These can be fixed with new Weistec stretch bolts if caught before self destruction. Google “R63 AMG: The Unicorn of my Destruction” for a good idea of what might happen if this issue bites!

If you are towing you need the torque/fuel economy of a diesel.

The 63 is the torquiest most powerful but has the risk of head bolts. The 55 is tough. Battleship tough and I can't think of any issues with them.
The 500 similarly has an excellent reputation for longevity.

ML63 will probably return around 16-18mpg if your towing something heavy.

Not with 5+ litres of petrolly goodness in front of you, you don’t. You just need to sit back and listen to the orchestra!

Oh dear, yet another thread degenerates into a petrol vs diesel squabble .

Really good that., I'm getting 20 out of the 270 towing a medium sized car around 2200kg with trailer Inc.

Not too sure if you can fit tow bars on all AMG's. The diffuser and exhaust would be in the way on my E55k. Just a thought.

The headbolt issue potentially affects engine numbers before 60658 and even then few and far between failed per se
As Craig says Stretch bolts as a preventative ...
