I get about 41-42 mpg at 70 mph and average about 34 mpg are these figures to be expected?
I got roughly the same figures with my ML which was a 4x4 and weighed about two tons.

Doesn't sound too far out to me. It's roughly what I get from my E270cdi and given that you have another 30bhp and an extra cylinder, to maintain the same MPG is pretty good IMO. I'm impressed you got that much from an ML to be honest. Do remember that performance wise the ML isn't in the same league as the E280 so there has to be a trade off. A friend has an E320cdi v6 and reports up to 48 but that may be trickling along at 60 in motorway traffic.
MPG is so affected by driving style, traffic conditions, road conditions and even what tyres you've got that to compare is almost impossible.

All these points are relevant and any one of them can make a significant difference, especially as you approach the limits of good economy. Tyre pressures, as well as tyre type are important and you can see from the CO2 figures, the tyre dimensions chosen have an effect on CO2 rating and presumably fuel consumption?

Another factor with diesels, which it is less easy to quantify, is the mileage which the engine has done. I would expect a car with 50,000 miles behind it to have inproved by up to 10% of the mpg it achieved when brand new.

41-42 certainly gets you into the McThrify club, but people with the old inline 6 CDI used to do rather better, either in E or S Class form. :D;)

Yes i do confess i wrote this thread under the influence of stella, I meant my ML did 34-36mpg at 70 which i was still happy with and would go to the mid forties doing 50-60mph but ive not attempted to see what the e-class will give at 50-60mph though another factor is i do most of my driving in the dark as i do twelve hour shifts + the heater on + the stereo full blast + the wipers usually on non stop.

I suspect you had a major computer error on the ML. On a run, cruising at 70-75 most have reported about 30mpg -which is what I got on mine. There is no way IMO that it would do 40mpg on a run.

On my S class, I had false readings from the computer and they reset it.

The mpg gets better and better as the mileage goes up -new engines are tight.
Summer gives better mpg than winter -the air is less dense, the engine warms up more quickly and you use less fuel to keep warm inside the car.

After a 12 hour shift, in the dark when I want me dinner staying below 80 is a real effort (read impossible). Can you honestly say you manage this?
Hence I get 41-43 on the way into work and around 35-37 on the way home ;-)
So yes - keep the speed down to under 70 and you may even see 50mpg. As Alex says, so many factors affect it. I have mid range 245 tyres on mine. If I ran on 205 Michelin eco tyres I dare say I'd get another few mpg - but then I'd not be able to cruise round the M62/621 slip road hairpin at 90 (sorry officer I meant 68).

I'd say they are about right. Certainly in line with manufacturer claims. Mine isn't that much better, (avg 38mpg and get 56mpg @ 70mph) and I am down 900cc and 2 cylinders.

Yes it is possible, quoted figures for the ML270 are:-
11.9 (23.74) Urban, 8 (35.31) Motorway, 9.5 (29.73) Combined.
I've never done it above mid 30's in the car normally, but one of the guys who has driven it long distances (probably known to JBerks, aka glider instructor) has had it in the 40's. When I disconnected the turbo (BPCVT valve), it got 39-40 fully laden (probably more weight than legally allowed).

If your hard up or running short of juice in your ML270, just disable the turbo, may speed 85mph, takes an age to get their, but worth knowing.

mpg is all about driving skill, Ive got 26mpg out of the ML500 running around Austria, up and down ~1500ft over a 70 mile journey, Im currently averaging 22.7 over 500 miles which is above quoted figures and not motorway driving!

Given that the govt extra urban figure is 35 mpg you can bet your sweet bippy you won't get 40 mpg on a run, tankful to tankful, as supplied by the maker, in the real world, at normal legal max cruising speeds.
