Could be one of the Diff bearings. Usual one is the pinion bearing but if the oil is low could be one of the side bearings. Check the oil level first. Difficult to pinpoint as noise is transmitted. You could jack up the car and use a long screwdriver on the diff housing to try to locate the noise.

If the noise is only present when under load then it could well be the diff bearings or worn crownwheel/pinion.

Can you describe the noise, I had a similar problem on mine which turned out to be a broken retaining spring in the parking brake.

Hi nick not managed to do anything about it yet[honda accord brakes] Its like i said when driving does not matter what you do with the engine/box accelerate/deaccelarate,coast. the growling is there. Swinging the car about and over crests [fast] is the only thing that briefly eliminates it.I am thinking the next course of action has to be eithier change o/side w/bearing or 2nd hand diff. or wait till it goes BANG!. Hi Fibaman its a growling noise, cant see ti being a shoe but i will check any idea out, cheers all.CV.

If the growling stops when you turn right then the problem bearing is on the right side of the car.

Unlikely to be the diff as the noise would be there irrespective of whether turning right or left and more likely louder on the overrun.

As you are saying new wheel bearings fitted n/s can't see that it's the wheel bearings. Very difficult to diagnose without hearing the noise, suggest (and thats only a suggestion) that it's still the diff bearings. Could also be the planetary gears in the diff which allow wheels to turn at different speeds when cornering.

Have you tried putting different tyres on the car? Treads can wear into "lippy" patterns that can make atrocious noise - just like a wheel bearing about to explode. This would fit your criterion of symptoms.

Yeah I would look into this. Recently had a similar thing on the front of my CLK. Replaced both front wheel bearings trying to get rid of the noise and then realised it was tyre rumble. Sometimes its more noticable than others depending on the road surface
