Hi folks

I normally use normal auto-transmission-fluid on other vehicles as power-steering fluid, and it's been fine. On the Merc, however, none of the manuals list anything other than "MB fluid" - is it okay to use Dexxron II or III or do I rick messing up the seals in the PS system ?

Similar question for the automatic transmission - what fluid ?

My local parts factor says Dexxron II is okay, but... I would rather be sure.

(I apologise if this is an FAQ)

Cheers

Frank

You should put Power Steering oil in the PS. You can buy it seperately.
It is light yellowish in color. That's what I use. I don't know why you are
using auto trans oil in PS.

Arv.

Thanks thanks and thanks

Most power-steering systems use AT fluid anyway. Just that MB don't specify what type their fluid equates to.

GSFcarparts.com are the factors that are telling me, according to their book, that DexronII (or better) is what they sell.

I bought an AT filter & gasket, and PS filter - so plan on renewing the lot.

Just a word of warning Frank,

The Haynes manual says use Mercedes-Benz Lenkgetriebeol (000 989 88 03) only - note the word "only" in BOLD.

Bearing in mind that Haynes usually quote Duckhams products as recommended fluids I think I'd follow their advice and stick strictly to the M-B product.

In my experience M-B fluids are not particularly expensive but a new PAS system would be!

That's exactly what stopped me in my tracks, Ron. But not knowing if the Haynes manuals ever erred on the side of the manufacturer, I thought I'd ask.

I don't have a good relationship with the MB dealer here - they also support Mazda, and were charging me EUR28 for a suspension bolt which I was able to get for $5 from a Mazda dealer in the States (same part# and all), and I needed four of them. That's a whole different story, but it means I'll have to find a more friendly MD dealer :D

The MB Lenkgetriebeol is cheap... at least that's the case in Hong Kong... only about UKP2.50 for 500ml.
