We have an SLK200k and although the PO said the chain was all good (86k) we changed it and the sprockets anyway. Cost about £700 all in. And although it was perfectly smooth and quiet on start up and running it was a good job we did. One of the gears was already pretty worn and I would guess at some point in the next year it would have jumped and gone bang.

Thank you for that. Do you know if the new chains and sprokets are up graded or will this be an ongoing problem?

On going problem, but they tend to go somewhere in the 80-100k range, so if you have to spend £700 every time you reach that mileage, it's not too awful

Does this also apply to the 280 V6? Don't need another potential problem lurking in the wings, although my car only has about 64k ATM.

No, chocolate balance shafts is the M272 issue - you've checked you engine number against the link I sent so you should be fine on that front.

I can recommend it :)
Just driven mine for 5 hours and apart from feeling like I was driving up a river most of the way it was most enjoyable
