rust!

i'm new here and i was looking for an E-class but i've changed my mind (mpg better on C-class)

the things i've learned by reading a few hundred posts on here is that old cars with a lot of miles on 100k+ are fine engine wise but look out for rust on the wheel arches front/rear and inside and out.

service history is also important - if the car has been looked after for its life it should just keep on going!!

good luck

There are some excellent cars out there, and some that have rusted, Do look at the tops and bottoms of the doors, behind the rubbers, wheel arches and around the boot and tail gate handles

Good point Mutley - increasing your search to include C Class will get you a much wider choice. Bear in mind that earlier diesels (which will fit your budget) were indirect injection and were not turbocharged. They will therefore be less economical and much less powerful.

Having said that, low mileage C Class diesels do come along (older owners, "retirement cars", used gently) and can be a terrific buy. If you are not concerned about "speed away from the lights" they will get you there just as quickly and are quite frugal. It is just a more relaxed, dare I say "grown up" style of motoring.

Good luck on your quest - we look forward to hearing/seeing the outcome.

i wouldnt be too put off by that if you are only doing the standard 10-12k per year miles on top of 150k

these cars can easily run up 250 - 300k miles and even more!!! my boss had an old e270 and that gave up the ghost with 343k on it+

i was suprised how economical my '07 mondeo is in comparison to the e-class

37mpg combined for a 1.8 petrol mondeo
32mpg for an e320 diesel
43mpg for a c220

these are all combined quoted figures but i did 2,000 miles last month and the trip computer says 35.0 from reset

Good point. I think the Mondeo consumption is commendable, but it may not be doing that in 20 years time?

The e 320 diesel consumption sound on the low side - is that a 124?

Well that's OK, as you will possibly find that the "combined figure" is on the pessimistic side - especially if you drive longer journeys when the engine is warm and cruising. I don't think I have ever averaged as few as 32 mpg on any tankful of diesel - and diesel economy is much less volatile than petrol when driving in congestion or in heavy traffic. Petrol car consumption really suffers when doing short trips on a cold engine, or if revving a lot to achieve maximum power output.

@alex - thats the one of the reasons i want to switch to diesel. it will save me £750 a year on 25,000 miles in fuel costs.

mercs last a long time and are a pleasure to drive - i'm not sure you can same the same for my mondeo?

i average about 32 mpg in my e300 turbodiesel. 39.2 @70mph using cruise control, 23 mpg in HEAVY town traffic, the rest to make up the average, is quick driving on country A roads
