what was that car ?

Call me a luddite but I'm sure you guys will have the answer.
Today I a beautiful black Mercedes saloon draw alongside me whilst out driving.
It was L reg (I'm in the UK so it will be a 93/94 model ) , had a E320 badge and only two doors.
Is this the 'pillarless coupe' I see in the ads or is there a two door E-class ?
It does get confusing reading about W124's and E-class's in the same sentence  from the experts

regards

Hi

Yes it is an E-class & it is a pillarless coupe & its a W124
There is a lot of cars in the E-class range.  I have a
W124 E-class 320 CE Convertable.  it is confusing.

Yeah they are nice arn't they and surprisingly affordable.

I have a lowly 1992 230 CE with low miles, leather, alloys, full electrics a full dealer history etc etc and my total outlay so far on the car is less than 2.5K.

Oh, and mine now has a retractable Mercedes badge that goes up and down with the remote central locking!   :) ;)

I managed to get one off Ebay..they used to be easy to get but now they are rare as rocking Horse Sh*t

I believe they were made by Dutch company some years ago who have now gone belly up. Rumour has it that someone over in the US has started making them again but I have yet to see evidence of this. I understand that these were always expensive, retailing at about 250 Dutch guilders at the time.

Basically I plumbed mine into the vaccum pump that operates the central locking so when I lock the car with the remote, the badge disappears into the bonnet. When I unlock, up it comes.
The badge formed part of a kit which included all the pipework and necessary bits to fit it to the car. All in about an hour or so to fit  ;)

You have to cut a slit in your existing grill to accomodate the badge (easy thanks to my dremel) but the kit includes a little crome cap which covers this.

When the badge is down, all you can see is this cover.

Thanks for answering my question.
Wasn't the cabriolet featured on CH4 Deals on Wheels once?
Suppose it is stating the obvious but is it a case of trawling through the ads to find one of these or are there any specialist dealers out there who stock older marques?
Finally, is the 320 the one to look for ?

Yeah I think the 6 cylinder models are preferable.

The Coupe's actually weigh more than the 4 door models because the chassis has to have extra bracing due to the lack of pillars. So my 230 is a little under powered - bit of a sheep in wolfs clothing really.

It will still get to 135 mph or thereabouts but just doesnt cut it in the rear wheel steering department :(
