I am thinking about changing the wheels on my S500 Couple 94\L Reg.

Can anyone tell me what offset this car will accept without any problems ?

The wheels on it at the moment are 8J 16 H2

ET 47 is the offset, wheel size 8.5 x 18 all round, hard to find a MB wheel set with this offset for a W140, dont use other offsets as it can upset the stabilty programe on the car.

There isn't a fixed offset for any car, and it is a wheel property, not a vehicle property. There is a range of acceptable values fopr any given car and for the 140 series it is 30-51 (ie whatever the German tuners have passed through TUV approval). The oem AMG 19" fitment uses 19x8.5ET46 with the optional 19x9.5ET46 rear. Any wheel fitment differing from those that the major tuners use should be evaluated on an individual basis taking into consideration what HAS been granted approval

This is only so for cars without ESP and then the off set becomes more critical since the BAS effect is calculated from this This is what MB say

Perhaps more critical but there is still a range of acceptable values. Could you imagine Brabus or Carlsson limiting their conversions to non-ESP cars or only offering wheel options that were within a few mm of the standard MB oem sizes? It just doesn't happen.

Yes as you say, there is a difference of up to -8 on the faster cars and -6 going from standard to wide wheels

I have a set like mine available, they need a professional refurb, there is no damage to the rims, no chunks missing of dents etc. they will also require tyres. £400

They are replica wheels of AMG II. They will fit fine so long as they can accomodate the M14 bolts required. Ask the seller if you can buy some spare wheels at the time of purchase.

The number of people that call asking for Genuine wheels to replace a bent replica wheel is quite alarming! The QC and manufacturing process doesn't compare to that for Genuine MB and tuner wheels. Replica wheels are made on limited time production runs and without reserves kept by the manufacturer, when you bend them (which they usually do), you will wish you either bought spares that match, or bought Genuine in the first place.

The CL wheel bolts wont fit those wheels, I agree with Chris, replicas are dangerous, steer clear.

Thanks for all the advice..........so are you saying that replica wheels are easier to damage \ buckle than their original counterparts ?

Also, would the car be any less confortable to drive with less tyre on larger rims ?

yes, highly unlikley that the replica wheels will use the M14x1.5x45R14 MB bolt, but most of them are drilled to accept M14 bolts of some sort (usually supplied with them) just to maximise the potential market to which they'll fit.
That's why most replica wheels are ET35 - the "averagely" acceptable offset for most MB vehicles..

Generally replica wheels are far easier to damage and buckle, correct. I have no experience of the difference in ride going from 16" to 18" wheels on a C140 but I'm sure other people have....

But in general, do you get a harder a ride from putting a lower profile tyre on the rims ?

Yes you do get a harder ride, and it is very easy to damage a rim with very low profile tyres

Yes, although at some point the spring rate and damping in the suspension has greater effect that the spring rate/damping of the tyre&air.

The S600 uses 18" wheels.. The most comfortable limousine MB have to offer..

the tyres on mine are 45 profile or 255 x 45, it isnt that bad a ride but 40 profile would be.

255x45 gives a faily good ride and little if any risk of wheel damage
