Thought I'd grow this thread up as a general bit of fun, in essence if Mercedes didn't exist when you buy your next car what would you go for instead,

I'll go first,

If I change the pug and couldn't find a nice E or S class I'd probably end up in a Jag XF or XJ

I'd like a Tesla. There's very little .else aside from MB that takes my fancy.
BMs are nice but....
Audi's are nice but dull.
Infiniti/Lexus/Honda just don't do it.
Volvo are nice but they no longer have those lovely charismatic 5 cylinder turbo petrol engines.
And Jags? Well let's just say reliability has never been their strong suit.

At least a Tesla is something very different.

Given that my next car will be a luxury hybrid and the mb hybrids are by all accounts crap, it'll be a lexus or an Infiniti.

Probably an Audi or I might get sensible and choose a Golf/Skoda and slink back into tedium.
After a supercharged V8 its difficult to think of another brand to fill the void.

Even if money was no object, I'm not that sure I like any new Merc enough to buy one. They virtually all have the obligatory iPad glued to the dash even the silly priced big GT, and they all have big gaping holes where front fogs used to be.

The iPad bit might be, though other manufacturers manage to integrate a screen into their dash better than Merc do. It looks like it'd been forgotten & it was a case of 'oh fcuk it .... just glue it there'.
As for the gaping holes at the front, nobody does it like Mercs.

So what you meant was .... that's Mercs styling now ..... And it looks naff. All IMHO of course.

Don't forget the fake exhaust cutouts on some models.

i find this a tough one to answer simply because what I use a car for , swap the S-class for another large derv , easy , change the 216 for another large coupe of similar stature , not so straight forward , I suppose I could just have a range rover and cover all my needs with one vehicle butt wheres the fun in that ?

what , despite the global warming twaddle Emilysdad ??
Yes .....

There seems to be a plethora of little 1000cc or so engined cars about that rely on lots of revs. My SIL has a Renault Captur, I believe its just 900cc  and Vauxhall has a new vehicle out with a 1200cc lump .... it looks way too big for such a little engine.

its funny that , Clarkson was reading the Obituary to the V8 NA and yet some years later there seem to be more of them than ever ! AND ! several of the big hyper car makers are or released large capacity V10's and V12's recently and not a turbo insight . . . . . . .

Will I get hounded off the group for saying Alfa Romeo. I love them. I've had way more Alfas than Mercs. A Guilia Quadrifoglio would be quite fun seeing as we are already in a fantasy.

Good choice! A C63 beater too,

Funnily enough I've been thinking on exactly the same subject. I was pondering that I would get rid of the SL320 and get something a little newer. I already have a Bentley (Turbo R); love it but getting a bit long in the tooth now. Also have a Bentley Continental (1964) for high days and holidays so was thinking along the lines of an SL400 AMG. Tell me why I shouldn't.
